Length change on number plates?

So I've had a fresh set made up, Old ones had the back pealing slightly.
I saw an X5 the other day with back and front short plates, I got the hand saw to the ready, measured up and decided to cut the old ones down.

I'm thinking about getting a set made up just to do this to now, or keep these and cut the borders off (and New reg at the bottom)

Am I likely to get stopped/fined for these even though they are correctly spaced?

This is the outcome (iPhone Pics)

Don't do it mate. If your gonna change the number plate size get the 3/4 ones made up.

I like my cut down one I have on the front, think it looks crap on the back though, especially if there are screw holes in the bootlid. They are legal as long as they are the correct font, spacing, and have the correct size of white/yellow border showing at both sides of the plate.

my best advice would be to not do anythign to your car. You should live by the system and die by the system.

I sound like a robot. If you like them keep them, you'll probs get a fine though as DVLA are strict with regulations on cars so police will have to give you a fine/producer.

It was just a trial fit, hence screw holes and not fitting the recess.

I'd consider keeping the front that way, but the rear does look odd.

Cheers JCC - Does the border need to be the whole way round?

Yeah, needs to be correct size border top bottom left and right. Think it's 11mm, could be wrong though.

Strictly you need the BS number on it as thats what they'l do you for (been picky because you are different) Which they always print at the bottom right of the plate so you will lose it

However I can 90% guarantee get through the MOT as the lettering is STD font and spaced corectly just cut down a bit

The 3/4 ones are Illegal

Yeah if they're really anal they'll complain about the post code etc not being there if you cut it off when trimming the plate down. I've been through 2 MOTs now with my cut down plate on with no postcode etc and they've never mentioned it.
