Lightweight flywheels?

  Evo
Are they worth fitting? anybody with previous experiences on cliosports with one fitted?

Having the clutch changed in a few weeks on the 197 and have a company in holland selling single piece lightweight flywheels ( original 6.1kg, lightweight one 3.9kg ) for the car.

Before i get one shipped over and fitted at great expense i'd like to know what sort of advantages it can offer and if its worth the money?

Car is used at weekends only for fast road and track day use.

Thanks for any advice.

No i plan to fit a quaife LSD in the coming months, but you should know all about my plans anyway Fred :p

Just wondered if its worthg fitting a lighter flywheel whilst the box is off? im changing the clutch anyway as mine slips in nitrous so need a stronger unit.

  RS RIP
idle gets worse

i'm attracted to the fact that the revs come down+up faster which can be usefull on track. On a daily driver though i think i would'nt want it , with the bad idle and maybe more nervous engine

Autosprint competition engines and parts Is a company in brum thatl lighten and balance crank, front pulley and gears, flywheel assembly, con rods and pistons for a four cylinder engine for £84:50 Inc vat. All you have to do is take the parts to them. Companys got a good rep too. Look em up on google or call 01675 464857, and they will offer decent advice too, might be worth ringing to find out the answer to your question. They advertise in most competition car, and kit car mags

Ive just fitted a 3.8kg billet flywheel to the cup racer, makes a nice difference. Quite an expensive mod for not a massive gain in performance but it deffinatly makes a difference.

How much and where from mate? I always thought the cup racer flywheel was slightly different from other clios?

From TTV racing components was about £270. Yeah they are slightly different, cup racer flywheels are modified to 58 tooth trigger for the marelli ECU where as standard is 59 tooth. You need to get the 59th tooth (the fat one) machined down to the size of a normal tooth to get the correct TDC signal. I learnt this the hard way, I put my whole car back together after fitting the flywheel to find i had a dodgy TDC signal and no spark. So i compared it to the one that came off to another standard one i had, I then realised what was up. So had the nice task of taking the motor back out again.

The ones fitted are just machined standard items anyway so its perfectly fine to do the above. I got my mate who is an engineer to machine mine down for me on a rotary table and sent it back to TTV for a rebalance. Im sure TTV would be able to do this when they make it though as they will manufacture a flywheel to any design.

how about a custom flywheel with a clutch that can handle the output?

mike are you on about the 60-2 jobbie?

Fred do you mean like a 7.25" AP clutch? TTV do clio flywheels that take them too.

Yeah cup racers use 60-2.

not neccersarily the posh AP units, for example i know of a kit that uses a volvo pressure plate for the megane

I had a lightened and balanced flywheel on my 106 GTI and would say it was worth it, you have to be careful not to go too light though

This is what Helix do with there clutch kits. They use a Valeo pressure plate that has a higher clamping force but has the same dimensions as the Renault unit. I found this out when i ordered the Clio cup/Sadev kit they do and it came down with what looked like a bog standard pressure plate. But when i compared part numbers to a standard one and they are different.

Made quite a nice difference when fitted on my old 5 turbo, but the overal weight was quite a bit more than the clios both before and after machining. Don't go too light though

Its alot of money to feel no difference though, im tempted to just fit a better clutch and leave the flywheel stock.

Most people seem to think the gains are barely noticable!

Get your standard one lightened and blanced then, Cost £80 usually. But if its not done by someone decent you risk it exploding, this happened on my mates 205 gti and it blew the gearbox the pieces and made such a mess of the car he ended up dumping it.

  GTiR 394bhp
Its something you are better off doing when rebuilding an engine. On my GTiR I had my crank, rods and lighweight flywheel balanced at the same time and along with alloy pulleys(all of them)lighter cam pulleys and slightly higher compression it made the engine rev much easier.
