Depends on the TV and laptop.

What connections IN does the TV have, and what connections OUT does the laptop have?

E.g. My TV has HDMI & VGA input, meaning the PC / laptop plugs straight in.

my new laptop is compatable but all i can see on the back of the tv is a small blue scart socket that says pc input and then another small one next to it saying dvi if this helps

KDF

  Audi TT Stronic
the blue scart sockets sounds like VGA , just buy a vga and plug it in there.. or use the dvi if you laptop has DVI out.

from my laptop to TV i just use the same lead that would be used from a computer base station to a monitor. very simple and cheap

yup i have just taken to chucking them out if i have a choice between vga and dvi i know what one is going to get used
