living with the 182

  Williams 2
hey guys, been a long time since ive been on here but im back looking at the clio again, just a 182 or a cup.

ive been searching around and reading about the differences between the 182 and the 182 cup but i havent come across anything saying what the 182 is like on a daily basis to live with.

i was just wondering if anyone could enlighten me on this?

cheers :)

A standard one is very easy to live with, after all it's still a girls shopping car it just has a big engine stuck under the bonnet. Most irritating thing about them is how lumpy they are when cold.

I've had my 182 with cup packs from new for 5yrs now, and don't look back.

I've had 2 bikes in the back with camping gear for a week in wales. 2 surfboads on the roof for trips to Conrwall and Devon, dogs in the back every weekend. I'm a building inspector as well so have to use it for work and driving to and from building sites. drive it sensibly and it'll return good MPG, but even with a mix of thrashing it about it'll still do mid 30's

so its not too bad then really :) ive had my fair share of the mk1 clio's but never the mk2.

atm ive got a golf gti and i hate it! i want the fun of driving back so im looking at the 182 :)
a possibility was the CTR but for value for money its all about the clio as many people would seem to agree looking at the posts about the 2 cars

I use my 182 round town like a normal car... nothing to worry about.

Turning circle is a bit less thats all.

28mpg round town.

Very easy to live with day to day, it's just a tweeked small car with a big engine not a supercar or track toy with dozens of compromises for road use.

They are good as a daily, nice bit of power in reserve so you drive it fairly fast without thrashing the tits off it.
Only negatives of my 172 were:
-OZ F1's fairly intricate to clean
-Rattles
-Driving position not the best
-Clutch heavy in stop start traffic.

I loved it though and it was a lot of fun, would certainly have another one.

Heavy clutch? Are you a 6 stone weakling?!! It's not even remotely heavy, positive compared to a girls shopping car with super light overly assisted steering and clutch but far from heavy. If you think a 1*2 clutch is heavy go try a car with a competition clutch in it and see what you make of that.

TBF the clutch is fairly heavy compared to a lot of similar cars. Especially when it starts groaning and creaking in traffic.

Well its nowhere near as heavy as my old landrover defender, but if you jump out of a clio 1.2/ corsa or any other eurobox then you do notice the clutch is slightly heavier than what your used to, its no biggy, just a characteristic of the car.

I'd agree, it's a fairly heavy clutch. Still only half as heavy as a 306rallye, genuinely painful in traffic!

I used to have a 172 Jay. Had it for nearly 3yrs, loved it, and traded it in and bought a Civic Type R. I have had this for 2 years now.
The CTR is great, quiet, smooth, revs so easily you'll bounce it off the limiter without trying.
The seats are supremely comfortable and supportive too. One of the annoying things about the Clios unless your lucky enought to have Recaros.

I'm not being too biased either - other car is a Clio 182 Cup. Just as much fun but in a different way but without the decent seats.
182 is a good everyday car - especially if your main drives are B-road blasts. ;)

I could live with either, but the extra I paid for the Honda was worth it.

Love my clio 182. I drive close to 300 miles a week and the fact I can justify the 28 mpg says enough really. So much fun and have a good turn of pace.

Whatever you choose tho will be your choice and your personal choice won't be wrong to you. Good luck.

As much as I love mine, the driving posistion and gearbox are really starting to get to me now :(

Thats why I went for the CTR.

Though when I had the 172, I ALWAYS got between 38-42mpg.
I'm returning 35mpg in the 182 but doing a fair bit of town driving in that too - so I cant complain.

RS Clios are great on the juice when you're just plodding along normally.
And with the turn of pace when you need it, they're a cracking purchase for the price.

I'd put it about on a par with my Corsa. Neither of which were a patch on that in my Fiesta.

Of course both were absolute magic compared to the one in my C reg Escort. That thing was an abomination. Still, can't complain for £400.

The driving position in the Clio doesn't bother me at all. Infact I'm not really sure what peoples problem with it is... perhaps I'm just an odd shape!

^^^ do you drive any other cars? It's when I get into our works base spec mondeo and the seat goes lower, and the position of everything feels so much better it makes you wonder

Do you do those miles in second gear at 68mph???

I go to London in mine and still manage an average of about 32 MPG every week!

personally mate i would go 4 a 182 cup ..

i almost brought a CTR but brought a 182 FF and am so glad i didnt buy the CTR now, as my mate has one and hates it. The 182 is great loving it tho only had it 3 months so far but at 19 i get bored of cars within weeks but the 182 is alot of fun defo living around many B roads .. if i was you go for a 182 or a 182 cup and save you money u would spend on the CTR and buy urself coilovers and a few lil tweeks and ur leave CTR's behind :)

I do but they tend to be pov spec little tin boxes themselves. I suppose if I got in a Phantom or if I was in a job that required me to regularly drive other cars then I may realise what I'm missing but as it stands I don't have a problem with the Clio's seating position.

I suppose, thinking about it, I understand what the problem is - Having driven bigger, more well appointed cars in the past - However it's not something that preys on my mind when I get in the Clio. The rattly trim is far more annoying IMO.

I use mine every day and i do 70 miles per day motorway and around 10 miles country/streets.

Since buying it back in May with 33k on the clock the only thing the dealer who sold me it had to buy was a new canister purge valve, and now 10k later ive had no problems.

driving on the motorway with a catback s/s exhaust can get a little frustrating but im used to it

  182
182. You're the guy I see going over the bridge in the mornings/evenings

Mine is used for going to work (25 miles each way) and it's fine. Good MPG on the motorway, sometimes 39-40 mpg

If you wanna give it some beans at the weekend you can and it's lots of fun! Had mine for 3 years and it's done 71k now but i'll be keeping her for a few years yet, classic car.
