Looking at 172 PH1 tommorow

  1.2 Dynamique 16v
Marc. I would not go near this car. You're obviously unsure about it so why even consider it?
Be patient.

LOL @ the response from the owner-

Auction car - no history, 95k - not 'quite sure' on the cambelt side- If I asked myself the question of would I buy it 50 times I would come back with the same answer 50 times- NO

As revels has said its not rare - there plenty around- & some especially cherished ones on here- plus when the OP comes to sell it unless he spends the money for belts etc then he cannot prove the SH, & that puts 99.9% of people off- the car will be worthless

Problem is 'quango- dont know your name) the value of a car is classified not just by appearance & condition- but by documented service history, number of owners & so forth-
If the SH is missing & in this case its the vital cambelt service then you will lose value on the car-

THe summary in my old 'CAP' Guide states
" cars without verified mileage or documented full service history are often valued at below average CAP as opposed to CAP clean"

Ive dug up my old CAP book from last sep & the difference in price on a Y plate 172 was £800 from CAP clean to CAP below ave where yours sits-

In the current climate the base car with FSH on 95k would fetch around 1700/1800 in GOOD nick-

THe fact that you cant validate the history past 60k & cant validate the belt service renders your car at around 1k-1200 quid.... & unfortunatly just because there has been an inspection is meaningless in terms of 'value'

Which is what I think the OP offered.......

as ive sold the best part of 50 Clios in the last year I think my forum 'spamming' is at least a bit worthwhile...

I understand what your saying...but you are a dealer..someone who buys cars at under market value to make profit ( thats not a dig, i know how it works and I know who you are and your history...and I know you are a good trader and well respected in the community....thought i would say that before someone gets their pants in a twist lol) you could buy cars cheaper than most, its your profession, its how you put food on the table. If i was in your shoes I wouldn't buy a car with no service history as it wouldn't be worth the hastle when you sell it on so I would have the same answer 50 times over..

that doesn't mean every private seller out there that genuinely loses documentation for a car is selling a bad egg.

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
To be fair the fact you are on here means you are legitimate or at least have seem to have the best intentions when selling what youve got-

I think from the neutral corner is though with so much choice you dont have to compromise to a car that when you come to resell will present similar opportunities in the marketplace that your experiencing now-

Theres a price for everything, the OP may be satisfied with what you are prepared to sell for, he obviously is on a bit a restricted budget- which may help both of you-

I guess summing it up- buying your car comes with a bigger risk than most in terms of problems that MIGHT arise, whilst the same can be said with any second car the whole reason for Service history is because it minimises the risk & unpins the value....

Either way of course best of luck with the sale-- I hope it goes to a good home.....

It really depends what you want-

For £1500 obviously you arent going to get the mona lisa of Ph 1's-

If your turning into a MINT car then you want ph1 wheels, refurbed steering wheel & belts done+ dents so 1k ish-

If your happy to drive around as is- in a ph1 thats a good colour -- the wheels may appeal to you- then buy it.....

I'm happy with the wheels, colour and steering wheel/small dents.

My only concern was the potential cambelt issue - could I take it to a local garage and get it inspected for a 2nd opinion for not too much or is it too much work to do a full inspection for a peace of mind?

Cheers

i was going to get them this week, get them refurbed and powdercoated at www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk ( just round the corner from me..had my supra wheels done there and can highly recommend..quoted £280) in anthracite with new toyo proxies. get ph2 sidestrips and get them colour matched with door handles and little dents removed ( got quoted £300 for everything at a local bodyshop)then some decent coilovers from k-tech....you see, the cambelt thing never bothered me as I think its fine and I had no intention of selling it.. that was until my work offered a company car of my choice lol so getting a new s3 :p ..cant afford to run 4 cars! :(
