loose engine mountings

WHen the engine is running, when i put the trottle down, the gearstick moves forward slightly (noticable enough if you have your hand on it.) however, when you come off the throttle, it sort of snaps back into place. Is this a loose mounting?

if so, are there any dodgy ones that i should check first?

Is this when the car is standing or when youre moving? I think a certain amount of movement is normal in a car when its moving.

Ive had all my engine mounts replaced and theres still movement - in fact, I dont remember it getting any better. The mount youre on about will be the "dog bone" rear mount that sits at the bottom behind of the engine and is intened to stop it rocking back and forth.

A ha, didnt see this post. Im having the same prob in 5th in my 16v, except its not a slight movement its a large one, but only in 5th ! Am praying its not the box, all gear changes are fine, could this be my mounts ? Are they difficult/expensive to have done ? Sorry to keep going on about it but really dont want to have to replace the box unless I have to.

Cheers

Mike

I have the same problem with mine, but its only a slight movement.

Ive read before from another post it is the gearbox mounting.

Large amounts of movement could also be due to a diff going. Dont want to make a large thread, but basically theres a washer in the o/s diff and it can wear, taking the whole diff with it.

Pretty much definetly worn engine mounts. I changed them on my 16v and gearstick doesnt move about much now (also less clonks and car feels generally tighter for it). They are cheap apart from top right hand one which is reno only, and about 70 odd squid. RT one might be less, but Ive never looked at an RT so dont know, but it will be mounts on an RT causing this also. Gearbox one, is the main one in preventing, too much radial movement in powertrain. Hill power do an uprated one, which sound like a wise investment. They are not as difficult to change as you might think (I certainly expected more hassle), give us a shout if unsure about any of it.

Oooo diff going, sounds a bit more serious, is the only way to tell by getting it in the air, should I still drive it ? Ill get the haynes out tonight and see how many spanners it gives it ! Just spoke to Renault Blackheath and Renault Bexletheath who gave me different prices for everything, 30 quid upwards !

Thanks for the help.

rob - well yeah i told you its an unlucky motor! actually its been very mechanically sound since i bought it, its just the snow crash and the dickhead lorry drivign into me that have shagge the panelwork!

cheers ben i will look at the dog bone mount first, ive don them on a few cars so *should* be able to do them on this, but knowing reno itll be the one you need ren. special tool no. xxx to fit!

and if i do need new mounts, am i ok with patent ones or should i get reno ones?
