'Loose' suspension?

Hey all,

Any one know if front suspension on a 172 can become - i.e. not connected to the bodywork (or wherever it attaches) tightly?

My suspension doesn't feel like it's doing a very good job on rough roads, but it seems to be ok when I test it whilst the car's stationary.

Are there any bolts I could check and maybe tighten up?

Cheers

The strut top mount you could check.... above the wheel arch under bonnet on each side. Although dont tighten it too much without an allan key in the middle (you will see what i mean) or else the spring might pop out of its position.

TBH, the suspension in not really meant to be fixed in place at the top. It is mainly held together with the weight of the car. There is usually some movement at the top and a cm gap or so.

The place where it really should be tight is down on the hub. Behind the brake disc you will see 2 big bolts that hold the strut in place (not the caliper ones) These should def be secure.

Although, i dont think many clios feel at home on bumpy surfaces so i wouldnt really worry once youve checked the above.

It should feel tight though!

When the suspension was shagged on mine, over bumpy surfaces it seemed to just juggle about without actually transmitting anything through to the shell, like it was moving completely independently of the car!

Since having the whole lot replaced by the good Matbrown, bushes included, it's a lot better, tight and controlled

Could it be you have worn bushes that means things are moving when they shouldn't be?

That seems to be the experience I'm getting with mine. How much would I be looking at to get bushes replaced, and should it just be suspension, or do I need to do something with engine mounts as well...?
