LY 182 or Trophy?

  1 of 19 Recaro'd 182 Cups
Hi Guys, im back, i used to own an RB 182 with Recarros and loved it. I had to sell due to buying a house with the Mrs, which we did in August. Ive since fancied a change and gone for a Mini Cooper S, big mistake as its no where near as fun as the clio.

Ive been offered £7200 cash by a dealer for the car and its currently advertised at £8k on PH(still cheap):

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1400728.htm

The question is, i loved the recarros in my old Cup and dont think i could go back to a clio with standard seats so if i got a LY 182 id have to factor in the cost of Treadlines(i know there are cheaper alternatives but to keep it looking OEM), but i do love LY so much(even though people seem to be asking too much of a premium for them)

Alternatively i could go for the Trophy and wouldnt have to touch it, i have around £1000 i can add to the min of £7200 that i will get for my car and would need the clio to be super low mileage(old one had 18k) and i would imagne there arent many LY's or Trophys about with that mileage.

Which would you get if you had £8k?

You could get either and still have change. Go for a low milage trophy and you won't be disappointed. LY is nice, but not sure if they are worth the premium and there weren't many made with the cup packs, so finding one might be hard work.

  Clio 182 Trophy
Trophy. I do love the LY Clio 182 though. I wouldn't sway my Trophy for one mind.

Make sure the dampers have been serviced mate.

Yeah ill be checking dampers have been serviced, if they havent but show no signs of leakage etc is this still ok?

Anything else in particular to look out for with the Trophys?

  Titanium 182
I'v been thinking about this recently, I guess it would depend which came up first and was the best deal because I love both !

  Clio 182 Trophy
Well even though they are not leaking it doesn't mean the gas pressure isnt low, they may look fine but may still need servicing. We have come to the conclusion that the pressure decreases to a point where they need doing after around 4 years. There is a way to tell this, ill dig out some pictrues and explain.. give us 10....

Ideal, Cheers Buddy, as most are 2005 that would mean that all of them should need doing if they havent been done already?

^^ Damper which has lost gas pressure

^^ Post rebuild - Note the gap between the bracket and the reservoir.

The advert doesnt say, are later numbers worth more than earlier ones?

No, I was just gonna check the Trophy register to see if it had been registered, if it has you can check users posts to check its history a bit.

  Clio 182 Trophy
Bear in mind it costs around £400 - £450 for a rebuild.

It transformed the car when I had mine done, worth every penny.

IMHO the dampers are OK if they've been regularly jet washed after using on gritted roads mine have done 50k of hard miles and are still going strong.

They just don't have the same seals as normal road ones so need to be looked after a bit more than usual dampers.

:)

Them pics are Great, cheers for that Ben, ill keep an eye on that when im looking.

Is it possible to see the resevoir up the arch with the wheel on full lock or is it a wheel off job. Just not sure the seller will be too keep to whip the wheel off for me as part of the checks :D

  Golf GTD Mk7
pop over to cliotrophy.co.uk and see if anyone is selling there. bare in mind the rebuild costs are quite high on the dampers, but nowhere near as the 1200quid a corner brand new.

Trophy without a doubt.
LY is just a colour. Take that away from the car and it's no different from any other ordinary 182.
I've actually thought about buying a Trophy and putting my engine etc in it, then selling my 172 as an almost standard car. I know I'd lose money, but I'd love a Trophy.

Id say the majority Vote goes to the Trophy then. It is a good point about LY being 'Just a colour'. Plus i do love the Trophy Turinis. Ive made my mind up, its just finding a low mileage one now. Im in no rush though so im happy to wait for the right one to come up, as far as i can see there are none for sale on ClioTrophy, one just sold which would have been Ideal :)

  LY 200
A low miled LY v Trophy i would go for the Trophy - If talking higher i would go which ever i found in the best nick and with the lowest miles on!

I have owned mine for about 4 years now and tbh sometimes i wished i just had a normal coloured car that blended in - Its nice in the summer but it does also have its downsides imo.

One on ebay with 36K priced at 7.5K, from DCS Cars or something similar.

Already mailed them earlier today, its sold. They are the ones that have offered me £7200 as a cash price for my car though. Ive let them know that if they come across one, i am interested.

I think the trophys are a bit overated.

I think the LY 182s look nicer to the eye, its easier to wack a nice pair of seats in and some turinis on. Easier than a respray to a much superior colour!

  Inferno 182 w/ Recaros ;)
50k isn't that bad if its been looked after.

I'd be very tempted to go for an LY but I do like colourful cars like that (hence the reason I bought an Inferno 182 over a Trophy)

I did love the Trophy when I took one for a test drive, and would probably say to get one of those as you'll have more choice.

Hahahahahahaha!!

Fair enough but i wouldnt like to fork out for the Sachs dampers, plus if the LY 182 is a none cup pack then the Sachs wont fit.
Also is it not easier to buy a car already with a nice pair of seats and Turinis already on????:S.
And as already said you obviously havent drove a Trophy! I owned a 182 before the Trophy and loved it to bits but the Trophy is so much more!

Folks seem to be forgetting that the Trophy has the more capable chassis.
If I had one I wouldn't touch the suspension. I'd just stick my engine in it, whack some good tyres on it, uprate the brakes and leave the rest of the car near on standard. They're unique enough already so don't need to be modded visually. Plus unmolested ones will hold their value better.
An LY 182 won't be a future classic. The Trophy will.

Well said, :approve:.
Although i do like the LY its no different to anyother 182 bar the colour.
Ive already uprated my brakes, thought about the engine but then i wouldnt want to loose what the Trophy is about. That said if / when i have the money i want to buy a 172 cup or 182 cupped and stick some TB's or a Turbo in, :approve:.

  FN2 Type R +MK6 Golf
I'd say go with your heart tbh.

The trophy is a nice car but driving wise isnt that special.A meg laps bedford faster so its not mind blowing. The feel of it may be nice, but i dont think a 182 in a nice colour would be a million miles away tbh..
