Magnex exhaust system

Im thinking of fitting a Magnex exhaust system to my Clio. Any comments on power gains, price, etc would be appreciated. Also, I do a lot of motorway driving. Will fitting a performance exhaust make the car deafening at 70mph plus?

On my Williams it sounds nice but is really boomy between 70-80 gets a bit better after that though but not good for economy! If you join Cliosport then Demon Tweeks will do you the 16v one for £240 delivered. Performance gains are that it doesnt rust.

Ive got a full Magnex and it sounds the nuts. Suttle when driven normally, but its guaranteed to turn heads when its floored. Love it!!!!!!!

BTW Ive got a de-cat and air filter too though.

I had a Magnex on my old Clio 16v, and I liked it a lot, but always wanted a bit more noise. I also now have one on my 172 and its perfect, great at idle and low revs, can get a bit noisy about 70/80 (motorway speed), but youre always going to get extra noise from an exhaust like that.

I didnt notice any change in my MPG, but expect to drive at higher revs for the noise, which isnt good for economy!! I always find myself sometimes changing down early just for the burble.

So basically what youre saying Jas is that the cars economy will only be affected by the way you drive it (like it is anyway).

Im after an exhaust that gives both genuine power gains and a nice "tuned" exhaust note as opposed to the orrible RASP that I get so p*ssed off with hearing from old Novas and Escorts.

Im pretty definate that I want a performance system. Its just choosing one that gives off the sound that Im looking for. Any suggestions exc. Magnex?

Magnex have a long-standing reputation for quality. Lately a few peeps on here have fitted systems from k-tec racing, which also seem to be a top bit of kit. The k-tec systems are LOUDer than Magnex. Magnex do claim some power gains for their system. Theres a graph over on the Yahoo 172 group.

yeah ben, if you drive your car with magex on exactly as you drive your car without, I dont think youll notice any mpg differences.

What year is your RSI? and is it a 1.8?

My Rsi is indeed a 1.8 8v (96) on a P plate. Im expecting to gain a noticeable difference from fitting a performance exhaust because of the size of the engine. Im looking for as big a gain as possible. However, Im not keen on the idea of a decat pipe as ive heard fitting one of these will result in you failing an MOT! Also, I dont want the system to sound deafening so I would opt for a silenced system rather than a straight through.

Is there anywhere I can buy a heatshield from for my induction kit? At the moment I have a k&n57i.

Also, Jas, what do you make of the new K Tec systems as some people believe them to give more power than a Magnex system! Will a 3.5" K Tec system be louder than a 3" Magnex system?

Economy should be better as it should be easier for the exhaust gases to get out. If the length of the exhaust is not right then you get pressure waves coming back in pulses at the time the exhaust valves are open reducing the pressure difference and increasing the force on the piston to push the gases out. Magnex are well known so should all be right but might sacrifice at some revs to get power elsewhere. Not a great explanation nad I am sure someone will correct.

Ben, I dont think youre going to get massive increases, at a guess maybe 4/5bhp on your car. I had a magnex on my M-reg 16v, and it wasnt that loud, so you should be ok. Dont know if K-Tec do a system for your car? K-Tec exhausts are very good though if they do do one its worth looking into. Unless you want to change decat pipes every mot time, stay away from them.

I know of people that have had performance exhaust systems fitted and have found that anything below 2,000 rpm is irratic. Its almost as if power low down has been sacrificed for much higher revs.

Has anyone else experienced this?
