Making The Sun Shine Again - PH1 Sunflower *updated*

  RB 182
Ok so i thought id start abit of a progress thread, so here goes!

I currently drive a remapped Audi A1 Black Edition, but this is going back in April, and my new A3 Sportback isnt due until September. I lease these via work, and my plan is to have an new Audi from Sept to end of Feb, then run a car for the 'spring and summer' months

Now i loved my Flamer to bits, so much that i owned it twice. I sold it to get a 200 a few yrs back, and always wanted it back. Me and the Mrs searched high and low for the new owner, who i knew was local, and then one day i saw him driving and followed him! To cut a long story short, i gave him my number and he said he was thinking of selling, but now ignores me

So, as sad as it seems, i had to move on lol

I set about trying to find another 172, and i knew i didnt want the common silver, or black. I wanted it cheap as possible, probably needing abit of TLC which i would do before i put it on the rd

I looked at a few other flamers, but then this one came up, needing TLC and it was the most uncommon colour you could get!

So, here she is

Spec is 2001 X 172, 76000 genuine miles, bit of history, owned a few times on here, part worn Parada Spec 2s, RS Tuning 'pop and bang' remap, KTec full stainless inc decat, no tax, no MOT, 6 yrs and 20k since belts done, and needing some love!

I went upto Newcastle, and handed over the £notes, totaling £600 and i was no the proud owner :)

20130113_095959_zps4c9c9b34.jpg

Today was the first time ive had chance to look at it properly

20130126_093103_zpsb022d6f5.jpg

Noticed a few things i didnt know it had

20130126_093341_zps811b565a.jpg

I was pleasantly suprised - it needs a CV boot, a steering gaitor, and to make it perfect, two track arms

20130126_093212_zps26308c9e.jpg

Few niggles include these two things - nice way to stop the blow, but not ideal!

20130126_093219_zps7a51df5d.jpg

20130126_093259_zps7d66b4ac.jpg

Also, the rear springs appear 'aftermarket', and the fronts stock, although theres no obvious height different when on a flat. Does anyone know what make these rear springs are?!

20130126_093324_zps6eafb430.jpg

Id bought some brakes off G172 (Top guy), but driving it yesterday to work on trade plates, i thought that maybe a few runs would clean the old disks - hmmm maybe not...

20130126_093205_zps9ad4bf43.jpg

20130126_093054_zpsac1b0dea.jpg

I set about fitting the new brakes

20130126_093433_zps1736f010.jpg

The rear disks were seized on via the bearings, either the disks were thin, or im strong

20130126_103053_zps7b7a77ce.jpg

20130126_103254_zpsab15df45.jpg

Also, painted the callipers to get rid of the blue - who thought blue looked good?!

20130126_100232_zps89a0c1b1.jpg

And the final result

20130126_122246_zps949282f4.jpg

20130126_122238_zps58b5a186.jpg

So, my plan is to sort out the bodywork, running gear, do the belts, and generally make it good again!

20130126_093134_zps68289781.jpg

So thats it for today

One more thing i noticed, the clock/cd display doesnt light up so you cant see it - not sure if this annoys me yet, time will tell...

£600 what a bargain. Even if that needs a fair bit of money chucking at it I can imagine it'll still work out cheap.
Low miles for a ph1 too. I'll look forward to the updates.

Re: Making The Sun Shine Again - PH1 Sunflower

Ok so sorry for no updates, ive not had the resources to upload photos - laptop is away having full VAG diagnostics put on (available for work if anyone requires me)
So, ive been busy with the Sunflower, tackling the smaller jobs first, then moving onto the harder things
My main aim was to make it as 'standard' as possible, although the wheels will stay black. It had poorly painted rub strips on, so i got hold of a set of standards and fitted these

20130206_165305_zps2c820a12.jpg

Now i decided that the radio/clock display not being lit did infact annoy me, so having rear the guide on here about how easy it was to remove the top dash, i gave it a go - it took literally 5 mins to remove (i realise it has been off before as its had a flocked dash in its previous life) Removed the clock unit, and found the culprits

20130206_141951_zps691257cc.jpg

20130206_142311_zpsead18d39.jpg

Also bought an engine cover, as it was missing

20130206_165249_zpsee9281b6.jpg

I bought the car with the hope to do a few track days in it, and when i'd had it on the ramp and done a quick healthcheck, there was abit of play in each track arm. I'd also noticed a knock on the passenger side front, so i decided to replace both bottom ball joints, and both track arms and track rod ends. Ive used genuine Renault track arms and TREs, one because ive had previous experience with non gen track arms, they never get me the right part - they're always too short, and two because i needed new gaitors and these come in the kit. The downside of genuine parts issss kerrrrrching!!!
So, i set about the job

My little helper

20130206_144911_zpsdc8d6c88.jpg

20130206_160513_zps67c04bf2.jpg

The ball joint was abit of a bar steward to get back in, id bolted it to the arm 1st and then tried barring the arm down enough to slot it into the hub. Obv the ARB is very tight, so i enlisted the help of the 'daddy', and also a neighbour, and managed to bar it enough to slot it in

20130206_162657_zpsfab35ae1.jpg

The NS one was going well, until i heard a 'POP', and then this...
20130209_151652_zpsde100ec4.jpg

20130209_151647_zps596c2839.jpg

It'd dropped all its gearbox oil all over my garage floor, the inner boot had popped off. I had planned to change the gearbox oil, but id of preffered to catch it!
I decided to remove the shaft, as the outer boot had also come off and spread grease everywhere, but the cv joint was seized.Instead i removed the whole hub, and attempted to press it out at work - it was so seized it started to distort the hub! Scrap that idea, i just cleaned the boot up, filled with fresh grease and sorted the inner boot out too

20130211_151012_zpsd0f9b3bd.jpg

20130211_150956_zpsa171f90d.jpg

I build the ball joint up differently, this time putting it in the hub 1st, then using a jack i lifted the hub upto the arm - much easier
I then drained off the rest of the oil, and using a funnel and some hose (a perfect fit for the refill hole), i filled the 'box with Elfs finest

20130211_200148_zps2601e1f7.jpg

20130211_195901_zps916d2e7b.jpg

I haven't driven it yet, so not sure if the knock is sorted, but the ball joints were shot!
I wanted to removed the bumper to see if there was anymore damage apart from the front wing, so i incorporated this with changing the belts
I went the whole hog, genuine belt kit, aux kit, water pump and dephaser pulley - again, kerching!!
Removed front bumper, no damage other than the wing - phew
20130217_124903_zps3cc86fb5.jpg

20130217_124842_zpsdb575b13.jpg

20130217_124850_zpse7874a3f.jpg

then set about the belts
'Touch wood', the stripdown wasn't too bad - 2 1/2 hours inc bumper off, which i didn't think was bad
20130217_143450_zps851ffd62.jpg

The belts are only 20k old and showed some alarming wear - check out the edge
20130217_132922_zpsa97198be.jpg

20130217_143502_zps969772aa.jpg

They are 6 years old, hence the change
Thats where im at. The cars in the garage, stripped, but the water pump gasket has welded itself to the block so i gave up last weekend!
Ive alot to do this weekend, so ill hopefully update again then :)

Re: Making The Sun Shine Again - PH1 Sunflower

Love this! So glad your going it the propper tlc!
also, my ph1 has the same dage where the front bumper has come away, i havent yet inspected but is this due to the clips on bumper or on the wing?
Thanks

  RB 182
Not sure why the bumper bulged - my wing has been filled (yes, plastic has been filled) and i can see from the back that its cracked, so i just think its mis shapen

Love this dude, always used to see it up sunderland had white wheels then.

It looks like your going to give it the love it needs im sure it can be a mint exlampe. Cant wait to see what else you have planned.

Re: Making The Sun Shine Again - PH1 Sunflower *UPDATED 17/3*

Sooo need to make progress on this as time is ticking - it's a week on Monday that it goes into the body shop, and I need to MOT it before then, sooooo....

As I mentioned in another thread, I did the belts, but then it wouldn't run properly - to cut a long story short, I tried a few things, then realised the horseshoe tool had bent and so the timing was a tooth out, so I did half the job again, tweaking the cams round, and she fired straight up :)

While it was stripped, I replaced the plugs with the genuine Renault items, kerching!! The old plugs looked old, and I mean old!

I had all the front off to do the belts, so set about rebuilding it. Unfortunately the retaining point on the damaged wing was missing, and I'd removed all the arch liners ready for the body shop, so I had no way of mounting the bumper - lucky I had a replacement wing in the boot

20130314_174915_zps7ca0ea73.jpg

Also, the horn wasnt working, so using a dremmel with a sanding end, i cleaned all the connections on the horns, and fitting a new bridging wire and connectors - got one working, think the other one is knackered, but im happy with just a single tone horn

20130314_182410_zps607fc32f.jpg

I went to Renault to buy all new fixings for the front bumper, as id read on here the full kit was about 8 quid. They struggled with part numbers, and in the end i got the numbers off Wests Renault from here. I also order an inlet gasket, and a bolt for the rear seatbelt buckle. Picked it all up the next day, and the bill was... 36quid!!!! Plus, they ordered two buckle bolts instead of one, and i cant send them back as under a tenner. Im annoyed more as i only used 4 of the screws on the bumper. Oh well, you live and learn...

So, this sat i took it on its first trip out for 2 months, 3 miles to work. I always said the exhaust was too loud, with only the one silencer and i didnt like it sticking out the rear, so i was just about to buy a K-Tec stealth, when one came up on the bay. I clicked buy it now, and as i was on a course for work the following week, took a detour in an A4 Avant courtesy car to Birmingham, and picked it up. Its mint, just what i wanted. That meant a new bumper was also needed, and i decided to stay with the facelift rear, as i think it suits it

First things first, i drained the old oil - im not sure the last time it had a service, possibly years...

20130316_085447_zpsd7bdead0.jpg

Then the task of replacing the exhaust

The previous owner, or rather one of them, had obv got annoyed with the exhaust blowing, so instead of sorting it properly, they just welded with decat to the centre pipe! I took 1.5 hrs to grind away all the weld, enough to see the joint, and then i managed to crack them apart

20130316_100954_zps94dfc386.jpg

20130316_101002_zps08b66459.jpg

New mountings were added, the old ones had split totally

20130316_102308_zps731e7536.jpg

And she was on

20130316_113843_zpsa5856e8e.jpg

20130316_113849_zpse13ca902.jpg

20130316_113856_zpsc8bb9299.jpg

I cut the long threads off the exhaust clamp to neaten the job

Off with the old bumper which had a cut out, and was damaged by rubbing too big wheels previously

20130316_121106_zps8f198697.jpg

And on with the 'new'

20130316_122754_zps8a81754f.jpg

The facelift bumper isnt a straight swap, you need to drill two new holes under where the boot shuts, as the existing holes are in the wrong place - easy enough to do though

It was now half 12, and the workshop was closing, but id forgotten to ask the mrs for a lift home! She said shed be 45 mins, so i carried on with another job

The gearknob was knackered - someone had obv tried to get the knob off with some big pliers and dug deep grooves into the metal. Id managed to get a mint used example, so set about fitting it - i didnt realise it came out downwards, and i had to split the exhaust again, DOH!

20130316_131513_zps45015d21.jpg

20130316_133057_zps46183889.jpg

Also, my gearlever was really sloppy, i just thought this is how they were, but to my suprise the new one is really tight and precise. I think this is the reason, on the old one

20130316_131506_zps0c28a854.jpg

And thats where we're at

20130316_135540_zps7237879c.jpg

20130316_135555_zpsafd5151c.jpg

I took it for a blast down the industrial estate, as its got the 'pop and bang' remap and id never heard it do anything. The exhaust is brilliant, a million times better. A Nice burble, and when i accelerate to 7k, then dip the clutch to change gear, i get a nice 'bang pop pop'. Its a gimmic i know, and will prob get annoying on a early morning drive to work, but i like it at the mo! Plus, it shifts! My does it shift, ive missed that

Just alignment to do, then the bodyshop :)

Comments welcome, as always
