Manufacturers 0-60 time and top speed

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner

I would like to know how they go about this.

I have noticed in my 182 that when im running with the reserve light it is definitely quicker, feels more responsive etc..

Now with a full tank of full you are carrying an extra 50 KG which is like an 8 stone person in the back.

So when a manufacturer tests the car do they have an empty tank with a little 5 foot 7 stone jockey drivin or what? There must be some rules and regs they have to follow surely.

The reason why i asked is that the new 182 cup is 0.2 secs quicker 0-60 which is probably the difference in a 14st person drivin over a 9st person.

AFAIK there are rules about it laid down by Euro law, which have been in operation for some years now. The only thing is I cant remember the detail, but things like the acceleration test now being 0-62mph (i.e. 0-100kph) rather than to 60, are the by-product of Euro legislation.

Anyway, all manufacturers have to follow the same criteria. It is to do with kerb weight. The tests have to be done at normal kerb weight, which to my knowledge is with a 70kg driver and a full tank of petrol. This may explain why fast cars never seem to have tanks big enough for the purpose. E.g. my valver has a 50 litre tank, but over a decade on, this is still roughly the norm for new hatchbacks and there is no real disadvantage in this apart from a full, say 70 litre, tank would slow down the sprint times when they test.
