It's finally EV time. Is this the future? I'm not convinced there won't eventually be something better but to be honest I'm really not that bothered, the ONLY reason I have this thing is because FREE CAR!
Well, not entirely free, through a salary sacrifice scheme I lose £195 of net pay per month to lease the car for 3 years and 30,000 miles total. However, I also don't have to insure it, maintain it (not that there's much to do on EVs anyway), pay for consumables, and most importantly, pay to charge it (I recently had 3x 22kW EV chargers installed at work). I do have additional BIK tax of £24 per month to pay though.
So by running this thing at a total cost to me of £219 per month, I no longer have to spend £175 per month fuelling the Cayman just for the commute...so I'm still £45 per month down...but, I also don't have 6k of miles of boring commuting wear and tear per year going on the Cayman. I see that as breakeven.
Enough sums, what's it like? What's it like to drive?
Well it arrived with 13 miles on the clock, a fully charged battery, and so far I've done 45 miles being the drive home, one swimming lesson drop-off, and a lengthy cross country outing just to leather and play with it. In no particular order;
1. It feels like a BMW. I can't state that any more simply.
2. It feels so obviously rear-wheel-drive. Really rear-wheel-drive.
3. Range will be good enough, plenty for commuting, errands, and free LOLs.
4. Coming from my Cayman the steering is really quick!
5. Even with the wider 'S' tyres, the turning circle is comical.
6. Initial pull-off, say 2-4 metres is a bit soft/disappointing.
7. Once rolling it just f***s off. 80-120 kmh in 4.3 seconds. LOL
8. The Bridgestone Ecopia tyres are very noisy but surprisingly grippy.
9. TC-off is hidden, but a dash shortcut means it's now only 2 clicks away.
10. Bringing the throttle in mid roundabout is like nothing I've ever driven.
11. Sport mode really hardens the throttle, Comfort is very soft by comparison.
12. The seats have zero bolstering, and I don't mean barely any, I mean none.
13. Steering has a hint of feel, enough to know when the fronts are about to start howling.
14. The HK audio after my woeful Porsche crap is wonderful.
15. Getting in the Cayman after the i3 feels like actually sitting on the floor.
16. It has the footprint of my mk7 Fiesta ST, but (for the front seats) more cabin space than my C-Max.
17. Pushing/bending all the plastic body panels is fun.
18. Windows down, walls either side, floor it, and I think it sounds like a spaceship.
19. My daughter thinks it sounds like a Tube train.
20. The visible open weave of the unpainted carbon fibre polymer roof has been mentally banked for later.
I think we're going to get along.
