Matched inlet by Alex at Carlton fitted

It does strike me that this is regarded as some kind of miracle mod when in fact it simply isn't. It can and does make a difference but it's a bit of a lottery as to how much.

Personally my Maxogen made more of a difference to my car, yet induction kits are generally slated on here........

Aye, it does what it says on the tin id say.

If your inlet is already pretty good, not gonna make as big a change as if your car is a bit older/ rougher.

I think Laingo was unlucky as he had the RS manifold fitted which is widely regarded, even by Ben as being somewhat of a benchmark.

Maybe, as my manifold was exchanged for a ported non-RS one, I actually lost power?

Like I said - Bit of a lottery

BUT in comparison to the cost of other worthwhile mods for these cars, it's inexpensive and could get you good gains. Worth a gamble.

Take care LAINGO!! You are on dangerous ground when you appear to be pulling the rug from under the feet of the forum shibboleths.

Certainly, its getting harder to get a gain on the latter 182's.

Where they start with a better inlet and ex manifold, they also start with a cylinder head that has the extreemly inefficient ex ports which perform approx 25% (35% dimentionally smaller and of worse shape) worse on a like for like basis. Where the early 'bigport' 172's have the benefit of being able to efficiently remove any extra wate exhaust gas easier, the 182's do not have the ability to do so quite so well. The 'behind the scenes' of such gains are alot more complex than simple adding one modification to realise 'x' bhp gain sadly.

Matt Wills. I have posted my graphs today. THEY have just sunk below the horizon as I type this.

The guy who did my mani mentioned the ph1 bigport engines and said they were far better than the later ones.

If i were building a peformance engine, the early sport casting head is the one i would use. The bottom ends are the same, but it seems they cut costs on the 182's using the stock production type casting and non CNC finishing them.

no, i'm saying that its near impossible to gaurantee the gains we used to see on the 172's.

Some 182 owners report a large difference in drivability, some report next to none.

I've never had any work done by Ben, but wouldn't hesitate in doing so.

He never comes across as anything but truthful and knowledgeable, and has always maintained that the success of this mod is variable from car to car.

I'd guess form what's been said if you have a 182 with the smaller ports on the head along with the RS mani (on all 182s?) then you'll see the smallest improvement.

If you had an early head and a non RS manifold then you'll likely see a bigger gain.

Having a mk1 172 maybe that's why it feels like it's made more of a difference.

Having seen my original inlet compared to the one Danlp6 fitted which had been matched, there was a considerable difference in casting.

yea, the ph1 172 has shocking casting tbh, you can take atleast 2mm off the ports to even match the gasket, the ph2 172 is better, but not by much, stevo's still took alot of porting!
