Matthew's BMW Z4 (#2)

I really don't understand people who say they feel like a 'bell end' when driving a convertible. What exactly is it that's so embarrassing? I don't get it. I think the Mk1 TT seems to have left a strange impact on people's perception of convertibles in general.

Anyway....

Tonight I swapped the manky aerial for something that looks a bit better. Not bad for a £3 eBay special

Next week the car is booked in at a BMW specialist in Leeds to give it a really good once over. Anything wrong and I'll be attempting to get it sorted under the warranty.

I think it's the whole 'look at me' aspect of them. Don't get me wrong, I like the whole 'look at me' thing but prefer people to be looking at the car rather than my bald head.

I'm the same, I'm not quite sure why it is... But I just automatically think that the middle aged bloke with the top down in his 'sports car' that's generally slower than it looks, looks like a bit of a wally.

Today I got the car back from the BMW specialist over in Leeds. They gave the car a really good inspection and picked up a few issues.

Coolant low
Starter Motor faulty
Broken rear springs
Front brakes due for replacement
Front fog lights have water in tje lenses

Given the car is under a RAC warranty from the garage I bought it from I asked the specialtst to deal with them direct.

I managed to get the starter motor replaced and also the broken springs. I also got them to top up the coolant.

The bill came to just shy of £400 which was fully covered by RAC no quibbles. Can't argue with that. As the car had been in the workshop for a week it was covered in dust so tonight I game it a really good clean :)

I also set about polishing up the exhaust tip.

Over the next few weeks I'm going to look at getting the oval exhaust tip replaced with a dual tip (as per the 6's).

Something like this...

I've also made a space in the garage so I can keep it out of the rain (hoping to avoid a roof motor failure).

Matt.

Well I've just discovered the traction control button and also the fact if you hold it for about 10 seconds it turns everything off.

s**t the bed, I'm having a laugh with this car now. Before hand it was very hard to get the back end out. The wide rear tyres and 160ho wasn't helping.

Since I've discovered the button I'm sliding everywhere. This is helped by the 'Radar' tyres some mug has put on the back to get it through the MOT.

So yeah, much fun

Oh and...

Did a couple of jobs tonight. First up was to change the headlight bulbs to white xenon bulbs, replacing the yellow Helogen ones. You access the rear of the lights via an inspection panned in the wheel arch liner. Wheels off then...

Thought I'd give these a try for a fiver. Found them in TK Max of all places.

Before on the left and new bulbs on the right. They look a lot whiter that the picture suggests. Happy with that.

Next up was to give the brake calipers a coat of new silver paint. Seems to take years off a car.

I was just about to head in for the night when I remembered I had some LED number place bulbs in the garage left over from a previouss project.

I really like this. I'd stick with the red light rather than clear if it were mine. You mean the central strip?

Last night I fitted my clear third brake light. The new part was £55 delivered straight from BMW and once I had a deep 8mm socket (normal ones aren't long enough) it was a 15 min job. Easy peasy. Really happy with how it's lifted the rear end.

Really happy with how it's brightened the rear end. Also funny how the M part is cheaper than the standard Red lens.
