Got yourself an absolute bargain there mate, £500quid for a car that starts, runs & drives with very little rust.

Are you going to get an MOT to see what needs doing to make it road worthy?

I think so, I was even luckier earlier, popped to my auntie's to see my cousins and they had a builder in who has just restored a 79' mini 1000 and mk1 escort mexico. I like died at the mexico. and he said he'd be happy to paint it for me :)

Sunday 1st July 2012:

So today I removed the door cards, this may have sounded like a simple task which should have only taken ten minutes. Yes it should have done, but the door cards which had been "installed" in Mia were solid metal, I think steel will post a picture soon. Because their immense thickness and weight for a door card, they had been pot riveted into place, so my morning consisted of drilling out pot rivets very carefully as to not go through the outer skin of my amazingly solid doors.

Once the front door cards where out the fun began. The rear panel cards "can't really be called door cards". Although these hadn't been pot riveted in, as this would have gone straight through the body of the car, they were well and truly jammed in. I got the passenger side out after around an hour, as I was being meticulously careful to not rip the securing metal of the car.

The drivers side was another story. As the bucket seat wasn't helping with any leverage on the panel, I decided to take it out. And of course, I could find every size spanner but the 11mm one I needed. I had 10 and 9 but not 11. So resorted to using some ply grips and a adjustable spanner, meaning that a simple process took much longer than it should have done.

Once I had the seat out, I cracked on with the door card. Now they're out I have to post them to blackpool as someone is doing a trade of some parts that I need for the interesting door cards. :p

Can't do anything today, as A) its raining and B) I have no parts to install or take out. :p

And sorry for the read and No major pictures I didn't think a picture of a door card and some bolts was that interesting :p

Parts update:

Just got myself a centre speedo binnacle and two ancillary gauges for a meer £70. Instead of the £250 asking price for a new one. All gauges tested and working :). This will be going in Mia at some point closer to the end of the restoration. But I just couldn't resist not getting it at such a low price.

Those centre binnacles do look cool but don't the 35th have the 3 clocks in the right place, I prefer them IMO.

Well if they did. Mine didn't :p. I don't like the 3 clocks because all the later models had them in wooden dashes, and that just put me right off them :p.

Also when I first started even thinking about having a Mini. My main requirement was the centre speedo :) Shows my priorities. Oh and on the clocks now. The speedo doesn't work.

Ah just looked at the pictures, only had the little 2 clock binnacle. Haha it's just a taste thing, always like the 3 clock look.

All i've been thinking of since you started this thread is buying a Mini,
or at the very least a 1300 Mini engine to tear down and rebuild, then at some point a rolling chasis to put it in.

Not that I have any money at all for it and the Clio needs all the belts changing
so that's all of my spare money accounted for this year. :dapprove:

Oh and don't think that just because you think it's not interesting, we will too, i'm interested. :D

Whatever you do, take a before and after picture for us,
I want to see everything you do so at some point in the future I have more of a clue what i'm doing when I get mine.

Aww <3 Thank you. Lol. I have before Pictures of the door cards. Tomorrow I will pop outside and take some pictures of whats behind the door cards.

Tomorrow is also my hunt for the Wiper fuse. After I was looking today and couldn't find the manual am just going to replace all broken fueses.

Oh and, go buy one! Even if you get a shocking example and do it over a long period of time. My advice is dont buy the MPi Or SPi more commonly known as the cooper sport or as I call them the later models, so from around mine 1994 is the latest i'd go for. The later ones tend to cost more and rust much worse!

Your right, it's all preference, but another plus is with my steering wheel, which will be polished and put back on btw. You cant see the speedo numbers before 60. lol, I'll be forever leaning forward checking what speed im doing.

I've been looking just out of curiosity and there are some shockers out there called 'restoration projects',
that as far as I can tell are just made out of rust. :S

Foot wells and boots rusted through, doors like lace doilies,
I wouldn't think a car like that is good for anything other than the scrap yard?

I know sod all about engines or restoration, but the internet is a valuable resource for stuff like that,
so i'm going to keep my eye out and maybe i'll come across a genuine bargain like yours.

Then I jut need to spend a small fortune on tools to get it sorted. lol

TBH, I have no restoration experience. No mechanical experience. Just Knowledge gained over the years by teaching myself watching YouTube Vids, Wheeler dealers etc.
All i did was watch the two wheeler dealers mini episodes. and listened to what Mike the tw*t brewer said about where they commonly go wrong what to look out for etc. and went from there. I own barely any tools other than the basic stuff, spanners screwdrivers and sockets. Just buying things and collecting allong the way. So that one day I'll have the knowledge and the tools to be able to turn one of these around in 6 months not a year and a bit.

I posted an add on gumtree saying i was looking for a Mini for 500 pounds, as little rust as possible, must run and drive not bothered about paintwork, wheels accessories brightwork interior etc. and thats exactly what I got.

I may be a member on the Mini forum, but so far all ive used it for is buying parts and some advice. I'm sticking my hole project thread on here. I'm on www.theminiforum.co.uk

Have a look through the for sale section and see what catches your eye.

Have you decided weather you want a round nose or a clubman?

You'd be surprised at the turn around. This is possibly the worst I've seen and then you look at the after shots. http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/topic/171219-mk3-saloon-very-rusty-project/

I like that you've got your knowledge from wheeler dealers, I watched those two episodes and got quite excited when
Edd said that they're easy to work on and great little project cars.

It sounds like you've got the same amount of general mechanical knowledge as me,
so that gives me hope. :D

I'm amazed you asked for a £500quid Mini on Gumtree and got exactly that,
and not only that but a bloody good runner aswell.

I'd best get saving after the Clio's had it's full belt service, i'm quite excited now. lol

BTW that wheeler dealers mini is on ebay now Look. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1988-AUST...mobiles_UK&hash=item27c87bba11#ht_1279wt_1413

Oh and I wouldn't describe it as a bloody good runner. It's running abit on the rich side, so I need to read up on how to adjust that, because of my lovely carburettor. I want to get it MOT'd asap so that me and dad can give it a blast up and down the A12 so that it gets a bit of use for the first time in 6 years... lol

I remember a piece on wheeler dealers about adjusting carbs from that series I think,
I can't remember if it was the Mini or a different car.

Edd took apart the carbs and showed that there's an adjuster on some kind of hollow needle that 'injects' the fuel.
(I say injects, as i'm aware carbs and injectors are two different things, see I know some things lol) ;)

Woo hoo, I've got them all on my External HDD. I think it was on a triumph? Who knows. Give's me and excuse to watch them all again.

Set Back:

Instead of paying me back like a normal person. My mother has decided its okay to pay me back when she feels like. If I sound like a bratty child I'm sorry it may only be £100 but this means not only have I wasted my time. But the bloke selling the dials.

Pissed off.

Hi looking at your thread & liking it. My 1st car was an Orange 1973 Mini 1000 (back in 1978) I had the head flowed & it made a huge difference. The centre speedo would go right round past the ignition light! My 2nd, 3rd & 4th cars were two 1275GTs & a Clubman Estate!

Hope you continue to enjoy the Mini. I would have got Minis for my Daughters, but too expensive for a nice one. They both have a Mk2 Clio 1.2!

Thank You, I'm not in any mood to do any work on the car atm. Going to park it up and leave it along until I come back from Holiday.

Finally got some work, so money should be coming in. Hoping for it to be about a 5 day week job, last time I did work for them they paid £50 a day, so that means in a week I should be able to buy my interior. YAY!
