Mifi Question

Ive just come across mifi for mobile internet. Hadnt heard of it previously. Can anyone give me some advice and recommendations on which unit to buy. And which network. My iphone is with Vodafone if that makes a difference. Also I would be using my ipad Air on it.

Huwaii (SP) makes good ones, network your phone is on won't make any difference.

GiffGaff are good for data only to, no need for rolling contract, just buy as you need.

Or just use an old phone as a wifi hotspot?
