mk 2 1.2 8v running issues

hi everyone

my daughter has just got her first car and guess what- dad needs to fix it.

ive done a service on it and its got new ht leads but it was still running rough.

i cleaned the throttle body with carb cleaner cos it had sludge inside from the breather which has helped a bit.

from cold it runs fine for a few seconds then starts to cough and splutter as if on choke.

once it is hot it smooths out but has the odd cough now and then.

although the car has done 167000 miles it doesnt knock or rattle at all.

any ideas please!!!

OMG. just changed the oil and it only had 2 ltrs in it, im sure i checked it the other week!

I got the right amount back in so i guess it must have been off the dipstick.

It did seem a little bit smoother so im wondering if after cleaning the throttle body it needs to re learn its settings.

Does anyone know what resistances you should have on the coil pack and where to measure between, i have a good quality multimeter.

No idea on the resistances mate.
"running rough" needs more explanation, is it only rough at idle?

Check for air leaks (along all the breathers), at that age the hoses are probably rock hard, they can get gunked up too (I guess your oil galleries and pump and filter could be gungie too if it's run low)
I assume it's an ETB with no idle valve? If it's got an idle valve clean that
Always let the cleaner evaporate completely.

has anyone heard of a battery causing running problems. my daughter left the interior light on for 48 hrs and the battery died and would not take a charge. before this it would start but not exactly fly into life. i just put another battery on it and now it runs smooth as silk- no coughs or sputters. result !!!

I guess if it was really week it might not be able to drive the injectors and coils. Don't over analyse it, it works now
Assume you fitted the same rating battery?
