mk1 172 vs TVR

  2005 Audi A3 3.2 Quattro

Yesterday I came up behind a TVR Chimera (or whatever its correct name is, please correct me), nice little motor in silver.

Anyway, it looks like were both going the same direction and Im keeping pace with him although, were not doing anything hectic. We get to a set of lights which have just changed green. I think hed already changed down to first, and Im in second doing about 2.5k rpm.

He guns it (puffs of smoke out both exhausts), and I gun it, but its up a major hill and I dont change to first. He was pulling away till I got into the zone where he doesnt seem to be gaining but we hit more traffic.

What are the specs of these things? How much better than a 172 are they?

Oh, also met up with a Frogeyed WRX STi a little later but I think he was doing the shopping as he wasnt playing at all

TVRs are well quick m8 havent you seen that jeremy clarkson vid....they race a TVR, Porsche 911 turbo, Lotus Esprit, an aston, a westfield and poss something else and the TVR kills em all....there wasnt much in it up to 60 but after that the TVR just keeps going like a train compared to the competition

Engine
90 degree alloy V8 engine

Capacity (cc):
4546

Bore/stroke (mm):
94 x 82

Compression Ratio:
9.5:1

Max rpm:
6250

Max power:
285 bhp @ 5500 rpm

Max torque:
300 ft.lbs @ 4500 rpm

Performance
0 to 60 mph - 4.7 secs,
0 to 100 mph - 11.2 secs,
Max speed 160 mph

Suspension
All round independent - unequal length double wishbones and coil over gas dampers assisted by anti-roll bars.

Braking
260 mm diameter ventilated front disc brakes with 273 mm diameter rear discs. Servo assisted with front/rear split dual circuits.
Cable operated hand brake operating on the rear wheels.

Steering
Power assisted rack and pinion with adjustable steering column -
2.2 turns lock to lock. 350mm leather covered steering wheel.

Wheels and tyres
Alloy wheels
Front 15 inch alloy wheels 205/55 ZR tyres
Rear 16 inch alloy wheels 225/50 ZR tyres
The word that best sums up the performance of the Chimaera is effortless. It is propelled by the legendary TVR Power development of the Rover V8 which in its current 4.5 litre form is sufficient to propel the car from a standing start to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and 100 mph in 11.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 160 mph. The carefully tuned big bore stainless steel exhaust system is optimised for both performance and exactly the right V8 sound. The extremely strong chassis is based on that of the racing TVR Tuscan which provoked Autocar to say "chassis and engine mate brilliantly."

Were the roads wet? If not then he was just messing with you. Ive driven a 4.0 litre and 5.0 litre Chimera. I cant put into words how fast these things are, but also how hard they are to drive. Clutch, brakes, accelerator are all extemely heavy. I had to use two hands to get the hand brake on. The guy who owned them spun loads in the wet when he got his first TVR. Then he learned to turn it on the throtle!!

Bug eyed STi would have been a fair bit quicker. The standard bug eyed WRX would have been a fairly even match. Having driven both of these also! The WRX was dull, the STi dull, but quick, very quick. I still prefer the old Turbo 2000. But the P1 is still the most entertaining Ru Ive had the chance to drive.

I just love taking on cars which are better than mine.

I knew the TVR would kill me but theyre very rare round here and this was the first one Id seen.

There are a few Scoobys, mostly WRXs, few STis, but no P1s

The other night I was following a 996 Turbo onto the highway...left me with a big grin as he shot off through the traffic. I doubt he even knew I was there

Especially because the little Clio often gives them a hell of a shock :D

Personally i wouldnt mess with any TVRs....... i wind up one most mornings on the way to the station...... he always lets me over take him on the A12 to them come hoofing past me.... 0-60 sub 5 seconds....... even the 3.0 Litre V6 would struggle

TVRs are sh*t sh*t sh*t. Stop talking like theyre better than the 172! I have never driven one with a chassis capable of coping with the engine. Theyre also made out of cheap, kit car fibreglass. Yuck!

I dont like them by the way:p

nightrider is it a blue chimeara you race on the A12!? If so its my dads!! No. plate ends with PJH (his initials!)

We live in hatfield peverel just off the a12 so he often blasts about on it!!

I think you are missing the point Rob. Very few cars offer the performance of a TVR at that price. To be able to do that the car is compromised in other areas.

The guy who owned the two I drove used them every day to drive into the centre of Birmingham. He was a big fella and needed to be, I physically couldnt have coped!!

Ive always wanted a TVR and always will, but I think Id rather go for a 993 Porker :)

It might be not sure if it is blue though, i think this is more of a pearlescent silvery blue rather than solid blue, does have personal plate though..... It is neareer the chelmsford area of the a12 and A130 mainly

Im not missing the point! I have personal issues with some people who work there lol. Their ethics are questionnable, bad memories

What you people seem to forget is that yure 172s are not sports cars where as a TVR is, light weight, REAR WHEEL DRIVE, big BHP racers.

As far as saying a TVR is sh*t shows what you know about real sports cars...thats f**k all!

His best man got him the plate as a wedding present. At the time he wasnt even sure he could afford to keep the Chim. Of course, hes still got it :D

RobFenn - apart from maybe your mate tom 1.2 16v i have never known anyone come out with such vast amounts of absolute rubbish as you, why do you feel the need to post complete crap where ever the opptunity arrises, you are enitled to your opioions but your simply wrong! the earlier TVR used the rover V8 - but so what if they did?! The rover V8 will have more of an effect on the perrformance car market then your 1.2 16v! The later TVRs use an all aluminium V8 that shares alot of charecteristics with F1 engines

you are so annoying it is untrue. it amazes me how annoying i can find you just by the tripe you post on here! Give it a rest and maybe switch your PC off for five minutes and go out and get a life?

  Titanium ph1 turbo

to put it into perspective, I raced a TVR coming from a roundabout onto a dual carridgeway in my renault 5 turbo running 22psi (in car boost) approx 180bhp, and the TVR even from the word go just totally left me for dead, its the fastest car Ive EVER seen on the road, the back end was literally bouncing up and down as it accelerated due to the stupid power. If I remember it was a cerbera 4.5 - I couldnt believe how fast it was, it was like a motorbike with 4 wheels, it just left me for dead as if my car wasnt even trying, and Id say my 5 @ 22psi is as fast as my cup (well it was until I sold it last week!).... ;)

ha ha ha ha!! TVRs against Hot hatches, no contest. My mate has a Lotus Elise 135 and we came up against a TVR Griffin once. As you know Elise 135s are rapid cars, 0-100 in about 15 secs, well this Griffin totally took the pi55 out of us.

lol cerbera 4.5 0-60 3.9 seconds hahahahah 20k 2nd hand OMG!

top whack fk knows! 190+ drove one round a track as a present left 911,dodge viper (wicked car) and 355 feeling like a vw passats (diesel ones at that):)

unless you come up against a one handed blind driver paralysed from the neck down (I have nothing against handicaped people , just illustrating a point), you have no chance against any TVR made since 1990. The power to weight ratio on any TVR will knock spots off anything else Ive driven so far. I was lucky enough to have use of a Cerbera 4.2 for a week 2 years ago and its left a very lasting impression on me. If a TVR decides to race you for fun, enjoy it as much as you can.
