Mk1 Clio Diesels

Just looking for some info on these really, preferably from someone who has actually owned one in the past (or indeed has one now).

Is the fuel economy as good as the figures suggest (around 55mpg)?

Noisy?

Refined? (yeh right)

Any other info?

Also which is the highest spec.. RN? RT? etc

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

My old one would do about 300 miles to a full tank. Was quite a nippy wee car for the engine that was in it. The interior is dire and its noisy as f**k. Mine was a 92 with 140k though.

I had a phase 2, 1997. 1.9 Penache (i think). Cruise at 90-100 no probs. High milage ones handle like poo (serious oversteer with that heavy engine and no suspension mods). Other than that very reliable. Easy to run on red diesel, 50 / 50 mix of vege oil diesel. I often thought about using 80 % red diesel with 20 % vegetable oil in the summer (but as a law abiding citizen obviously i didnt;)). The vege oil makes them run smoother with less tractor noises. If you did that its about equivalent to running at about 120 MPG. I think i calculated it as 1p a mile or something stupid. Interior is bland but wearas well. Cheap for parts. Cheap to insure. Rust not usually a prob. Can pick up a 140k one for £500 and the engines will do 300k easy (so im told). Best to get a newer one with higher miles, than an old one ith low miles IMO.

I got a M reg one with 180k and yes it does the claimed MPG and goes well! Always reliable and goes on and on.............Got a P reg one as well and its just as good.......The M reg is basic but its not that noisey and does its job very well! Worth every penny I reckon..............

Ive got an L reg one, 90k on the clock. Its an RT, so its got the full spec (electric windows, power steering, electric mirrors, etc). Im quite pleased with it. However saying that, dont bother getting one if youre into racing people off the lights, although you could probably get away with racing burberry boys in there 1.2 Novas/1.1 Fiestas etc.

One thing though, the interior is seriously sh*te (as it is on most mk1 clios). The thing rattles and squeaks like f**k, no matter what you do. And ive yet to see a Mk1 clio that doesnt leak water through the sunroof/door seals.

my mate had an L-reg one a few years back with over 100k on the clock and it still went like it had less than half that. it was much nippier than the 1.8D fiesta I had for a while at the same time.

<- The Williams comes in handy if anyone tries it at the lights. ;)

Just need a car purely to get myself to and from work, which could be a 130+ mile round trip some days.. and I figure while Im doing it I might as well buy another Clio!

Very slow and very tractor like ! Bought one for my dad, to replace a zx 1.9D.

The ZX was much smoother and had more torque throughout the rev range. I have driven both and find the Clio Diesel hard work. I have also serviced both - the Clio was very difficult in comparison to the ZX, the oil filter is very difficult to release with out a specialist tool, avaliable from halfords for about £16.00 and dont even start me on the fuel filter ! All in all theough, the king is correct, tread one right and it will go on for years.
