Mk1 Cup steering racks - differences?

I can't find it now  but someone, somewhere recently suggested to me that the Mk1 Cup racers had a different manual steering rack to the road cars' manual racks.

Is this the case?

I'm considering a manual conversion to replace what I think is a failing power set up but from what I've heard the normal road car manual racks have more turns lock-to-lock, which I don't really want.

Did the cups have higher gearing and less turns?

I know a few people on here are running cups for trackcars, and I don't know if Tony Hunter(?) or others used to race them back in the day?

All help very much appreciated! :)

Thanks edde, you are as ever a very useful mine of information!

Matbrown has said he'll try to check his out this weekend for differences so we'll see how different they are, hopefully... :)

If you are lucky enough to uncover more than one cup valver rack please give me a shout.

Old post, but the MK1 cup car manual racks are circa 4 turns lock to lock, exactly the same as the road car 1.4's and 1.2's. Ive had both. There is no difference.

Williams PAS rack is 2 and 3/4 turns lock to lock and the renault 19 16v rack is 3 and 1/4 turns lock to lock.

I was on the lookout for a quick RHD power steering rack for years...

There are companies that would alter it, but it was all bespoke stuff

just so you know..

The Renaultsport cup manual rack IS THE SAME as a 1.4 manual rack. Same turns lock to lock, visually the same.
I know this is fact as I have one, and have compared it to valver and willy racks.
The williams rack is the "quickest" of them. you can run it without the PAS connected. depends on what you are using the car for really...

It was me who raised the question about the racks :)

I need a manual rack for my 20v MK1 project beginning asap.

Guess I'll be having the 1.4 manual rack too then :)

oh, just to let you know mate, I was asking about coloumns. You need a manual column to go with a manual rack.

Ah yeah, I remember reading that somewhere :)

I reckon I'd stick with the Williams rack if I did lose the power steering - anything else would seem too low geared at speed!

I would of course need Mr T arms to park it though... LoL

wouldnt you loose some feel using a PAS rack without PAS? or if you drained the system would it just be the same as a manual rack?
