mk1 golf cabby project

  Megane r26
Well for the past couple of months been helping me mate build his most cabby, I'm a mechanic by trade an be likes getting stick in so when there's some knowledge needed or he gets stick I'm there lol.

Here's a quick video of it on the rollers today having its Carbs tweeked.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umTxRnRqjt4&feature=youtube_gdata_player

The car started out as a 1.8 carb clipper model. We have fitted a 2.0 abf engine from a mk3 gti with twin 45 carbs. Its running the edu from a mk2 kr 1.8 16v which is taking care of the ignition side of things along with the mk 2 distributor set up.

Well today it ran 207bhp peak power but that has been reduced to 188bhp after the Carbs have been altered some more to give it better driveability an a smoother torque curve. I will add some more pictures an information later of the build an finished product. C &C welcome.

Yeah i'm gonna post up some of the build an the finished product. As for the Carbs the main reason was that the manifold is readily available an its tried an testrd really an the manifolds for the bike Carbs usually contain rubber joiners to join the Carbs to the manifold which looks abit naff an in our opinion doesn't look like it'll do much for the flow ;)

Few more pics of the completed car, a few more things to put on it like an early mark 1 grill an chrome trim an replace the the black trim down the side with the chrome on too

We made a bit of a mess but it was all done an packed away before his missus got home (she doesn't agree with it lol)

Before removing the engine we checked it over madesure it was running sweet i.e compression, oil pressure, running temps an pressure tested an gas tested the coolant system. Once it was out we fitted a new clutch, cambelt and a few other seals an then just a good service.

Engine in place

Thats all for now, hopefully a few more videos but even after we roughly set the carbs up ourselves using colortune an balancing them an getting the timing spot on the thing was savage at 207bhp but now they've been tweaked on the rollers it should be mint, haven't been able to put it through its paces due to todays weather ;)

Very nice.

How easy of a conversion is the ABF conversion? I'm assuming it's harder to have it running on injection rather than carb?

Also quick question as I'm currently helping my friend rebuild his Mk1, your's being the 1.8, was it running the Pierburg 2E carb? We can't seem to find anything online with regards to them, just 2EE's and 2E2's. PITA lol.

To be honest getting and engine in itself is a breeze, biggest thing we had to work was the ignition system really an seeing as we only needed it to control the spark, hence why we used KR ecu (early one as it has a more aggressive ignition curve) but that killed 2 birds with one stone an saved sorting out the mk 3 immobiliser. Then we struggled to find a exhaust manifold. Also it was quite hard to find information on forums as no one had a clue.

As for information on the pierburg me mate has an old manual I think.

  Dodgy one
207bhp from an abf!! which iirc correctly are around 150bhp from factory? Impressive, Sounds great too :)

Thats right, we were only hoping for around 170bhp cause his last mk1 1.8 16v on twin 40's only made 160bhp ish. It really does move though an the carbs sound great.

I think the chrome grill and trims will make a world of difference and go nicely with the splits.

bet its fun to drive! Good work guys :approve:

Yeah he wants it to look a little more old school which i think the grill an trim will do aswell an dropping the it to sigle headlights.

Heres his last mk1 gti, its was an american import shell which he converted to left hand drive. Featured on cover of golf plus too.
