Mk1 williams revs but no drive

Hi

As i drive af harshly the my williams pulled its self out of gear, do i put it back in and nothing so i trird all the gears and still nothing it just sits there as if its ticking over.
Can anyone help me please.

Does the speedometer jump about when you engage a gear and attempt to drive away? If so, diff circlip is at fault

100% diff circlip as Mick said above..

Yep deffo sounds like the diff circlip

problem is once they pop they don't stop.

A ghetto fix is to have the circlip welded in situ - my Williams had this done, lol. Other than this you could keep replacing it (did this twice and then got pissed off), new gearbox or replace with a bolt in circlip.

Short term about £50 for a new clip and some welding, maybe a bit more if you change the gearbox oil for fresh stuff. Long term you need another gearbox.

Cant you use a Ph1 box in the williams?

Yes but you can't have it as its for my R19. Honestly, your best bet is either a full rebuild on yours or buy a JC5 unit from either a phase 1 172 or 172 Cup as these both have sensor driven speedo drives.

With a 172 box the original airbox won't fit without cutting

You have to use the bottom gearbox mount from a 172 and use the top have of the Williams mount

i fitted one of these along with a ph1 172 box, but it does work on the williams box too! mine never popped whilst this was fitted and is still going strong from what im told.

Slight difference in pictures but you get the jist.

Martin182 ive looked into the whole circlip thing and stumbled across this flange and i found them on ebay for £50 so im quite happy and gonna give it a go cheers for the replies everyone cant wait to get the williams back now

After having a new circlip put on the mechanic told me he never retrieved the old one from the box anyways all was well for 2 days until my clio started making all sorts of wierd noises. In the end i took it to a gearbox specialised and he rebuilt the box, new clutch, new cables the lot and now drives spot on, faultless so well happy bit expensive but i dont mind its worth it.

Also i had one of them flange looking things put it 50 quid off ebay from France so it should never happen again realy

Warren sorry but flol at the mechanic you used!! he never retrieved the circlip but carried on anyway? No wonder it went bang.......... i would be giving him the bill!!!

Make sure they stuff a rag round the gap between the gear housing and diff or you will end up with a box full of swarf when drilling and tapping the holes..

The gearbox specialist completeley stripped the gearbox reconditioned put all new gearing and what not in there fit a new diff, cables clutch fitted that flange and put back in so iys like brand new.

And as for the other mechanic what a two bob c**t he is dont worry i'll get what im owed. Lol

by the way do you know where i can get some 16v door mouldings from on a 2 door cause ive been looking for months now and cant find any so im asking everybody all the time cheers
