Mk1's are the best....

  Valver Lookalike Mk1 Ph3
English? Think you'll find it's perfect.

Depends on the mk1; wouldn't swap it for a willy/fast valver.

  1998 BMW e46 323i
MKII looks so much more modern, the MkI has silly little front lights. IMO the MkII has a much more flowing line, and as above the MkI has an inferior dashboard and what... no climate?! eeck, don't know how you kids manage ha ha

I think it's a lot to do with image rly, even if you have 1 you've got to agree that mk2's look soft as sh*te.

Luxuries? have you driven one hard?

Nope never driven one full stop...don't need to. I know they are too slow and loaded with useless crap for my taste.

Martins idea of a stripped out car is very stripped out. I recon he'd think an ITR racing car had to much in it.
Anyway martin least with a 182 you could strip out loads of spare weight the Willaims doens't have as much potential weight loss.

I'd personally have a Mk2 Trophy if i had to pick over a Williams as the seating position is better (relitively) and it has more headroom. The Mk1 is superb though and its not second best, its equal IMO in many respects just does things differently.

Not wanting to start an argument but the Mk1 made the Evo car list of top ten cars of the decade. Maybe the mk2 will be there in future when people look back at it like they are with the Williams/16V are now.

For alot of people on here, that's f**king spot on. lol.
And proud of it, why would I want to drive around in a 10yr old car! lol :D  ;)

People who slate the 172/182/cheap/Gimmick (whatever version) without actually driving them have no arguement, how can you say one is better than the other without a comparison?

I have driven a mk1 172 and didnt get on with it. Seating position is gash as is the dash and tbh it didnt seem any quicker than my old valver?! (it had a few mods)

As for the mk1 looking like a twingo?! lol

Even if I had a lot of money and could only choose a clio then it would be a mk1 - then I'd use the rest of the money to mod.

Even if you had £1m and the Clio was just for a daily runner - you'd still choose the Mk1? Fair play.

In that scenario I think I'd buy a Trophy and spend even more money on engine mods. A 200bhp+ Trophy would have to be just about the most untouchable hot hatch ever - past, present or future. Hell, it already is basically :approve:

Soft - the front end on the MkII is more aggressive, less Twingo (like the MkI)

Since when does the front end of a mk1 look like a twingo or am i reading this wrong?

Aren't mk1's quite bad in the rusting department compared to other cars of the same age.

Still, Valvers and Willys do still look good. Not as good as a Cup or Trophy imo.

  20VT Clio & 9-5 HOT
i do like the mk2 clios, but ill always have a soft spot for the mk1's!

wide arches and bonnet bulge as standard! Just that bit more agressive than the mk2's IMO!

  Black/Gold 182
I presume the twingo comment was referring to the mk2 phase 1 (is this even right?) i.e. what you'd mean by saying a mk 1 172 as oppoed to a mk2 172

I almost puked when i saw the mk2 172. they just look discusting. as for the best looking clio id agree, its gotta be the mk1 v6. but if we're talking about mk1 valver/willy, mk1 172's and mk2 172/182, its gotta be the valver and willy any day of the year.

the original post was asking what looks the best(presumably from the ouside), mk1 172's just look boring and soft and the mk2 was just a very poor atempt at trying to make the mk1(172) look mean. It didnt work!

  Rb 182
I love my Mk1 and ill love it even more when its turbo'd but if a mk1 172 came my way i wouldnt say no!

What a load of b****cks, I could afford a 172/182. But what would be the point in spending an extra 10k for it to do absolutely nothing better than a valver!?

Ive driven a number of 172's and prefer the way a valver/williams drive.

In fairness he did say "without actually driving them"

love the "we" think it's dated looking blah blah blah comments. who the hell is "we"? do I know this guy? most people that are into their cars seriously choose MK1's... , hence all the DECENT club 1/4 mile times being done in MK1's with a handful of MK2's just about keeping up. The MK2's looks pants accross the range, there's only the Cup, Exclusive and trophy that I would give the time of day, I now see 182's all the time, they are the new Civic for that market it would seem and the amount being driven by young kids is shocking (prepare for insurance increases). They are better spec'd than the MK1 but that's it, I suppose if I was a young mother or bird in general though I would get one ;)

also... did MK2 Phase 1's come in any other colour than silver?

It's true that the Mk2 is too common now days, common as an Escort around here.

Mk1's All the way..

Whats all this b****cks about money? Hell I'd rather spend 10k on a valver than 10k on a newer clio anyday of the week, I love how all the mk2'ers are going super defensive, all the mk1'ers don't give a fook either way - we like what we have!

Give me 10k and keys to a Renault depot... Mint valver for the missus, valver and a willy for me and a deposit on a house please, That trophy's too common looking for us..

Well thats not really true is it? The thread is about Mk1s..seems to me its those owners throwing their rusty toys out the pram.

Shame on Tom20v for starting this one! - talk about red rag to a bull!

I would love to own both if I could justify the extra cost. I got rid of my valver because I was starting a new job and wanted something a bit newer to munch up the miles and love the Renault Sports. I find the 182 much easier to live with every day (maybe I'm not hardcore enough), but if I wanted a bit of fun for occasional/track use I'd stick with the mk1 - much more involving.

If my circumstances change a little, I'll definitely be in the market for a 2.0l Valver as a second car.
