mk2 ph2 steering rack . . . . loose???

i have been informed that the reason for the weird feeling through the steering wheel on my car is that the steering rack is loose. . . .

it is on "chavvy" fk lowered suspension but i am getting differing opinions from people on the problem and the fix.

my question is how is the steering rack (on a 52 mk2 ph2 1.2 16v) attached to the chassis? is it with D ring attachments that you can "just tighten up"?

cheers for any help/knowledge/suggestions!

Two u-clamp hooks bolted onto the subframe with rubber bushes to stop banging. One of two things could have happened. The rubber has corroded and the rack has little movement. The other is the bolts have come loose, but there a bast*rd to get to. Id get a crow bar behind it and wiggle it to see if there is movement.
But ill bet you good money that its either the bottom ball joints or track rod ends. Mine was doing the same thing and the bottom ball joint was so worn it could nearly come out of the ball joint. IMO on all Renaults you should replace the ball joints and track rod ends every 35000 as itscheap enough.

it could be in fact that its play in the rack which is a bit more common than a loose rack. Which sounds wrong lol.

ball joints and steering rack both needed replacing on mine a few weeks ago. i had the same problems as you, it felt like it was rocking about like i was on a boat!!

when i had it all done it was perfect again.

ps. how can a make of suspension be chavvy haha!?

Play in the rack sounds good, my cup had it, and it was EVIL to drive, felt like it wanted to kill you when you went over a bump, had a new one under warranty, felt a different car altogether!!

If the seals have gone in the rack then you cant recon them im affraid. Luckily i have a steering rack that would fit your car for sale :D
