mk3 air intake silencer

Hi there

I have a mk 3 Clio 1.6 GT. On the air intake is a little panel (sits on top of the battery) that connects to it. A friend has said its a silencer. Does anyone no if I take it off if there is anything I can put instead to actually make it louder?
