Mmm coolant

Need to top the 172's coolant levels up as it's getting a bit low and I've got no cash to get the whole thing serviced yet :p

Halfrauds sell the stuff I need?

You sure that'll be alright Fred? :p

It's hovering about 2cm from the Min mark when the engine's cold. When it's warm (ie when I've been driving it) it's somewhere around the middle.

Mine was very low and I just used mainly water and a bit of Tesco's own that I picked up while getting Petrol.

yeah i'll be fine, a few hundred mil in a 7L or so system will be fine

Is the Coolant System really 7 Litre?

I keep topping mine up with say 500ml a time and I look back and its dropped again and was beginnning to worry about Head Gasket BUT Oil looks ok and I've only put say 3-4 Laitres in mine and it was Dangerously low so fingers crossed its not Head Gasket.

I wouldn't keep topping up with water if i was you . Water isn't as efficient as coolant at keeping your engine cool plus you run the risk off it freezing in the radiator . Ideally it should be mixed in a ratio of 60:40 antifreeze to water to work most efficiently .

Check the car once warmed up on a cold day, i had a pierce in the top corner that would billow steam at temp and lose the coolant that way, bit of rad weld worked a treat.

Bumping this thread as I'm starting to wonder about my car having a leak. Granted, I've not yet put 7L into the system but I do have a split in the top, smaller coolant hose just above the clip thanks to my Simota induction kit being larger than most other induction kits.

Slap me if this is painfully obvious but the top, smaller coolant pipe shouldn't matter should it? What's it purpose being positioned as it is towards to top of the expansion tank?

Hmm you might have just answered my question....Maybe we can block the top pipe up , or just vent it? I am having a problem also with the topup tank as i have just fitted a big wide V6 airbox straight off my throttle body and its kinking the top hose. Did you say you are running no top hose from the coolant tank on yours?? I think the top hose is just there if the water boils in the topup tank and its an overflow pipe?

Actually i`ve been thinking about this and as the water boils and pressure builds up that tank is the point where the pressure is relieved. The pressure and vacuum created in the tank pulls water into the tank through the top hose.
