Mondial Blue Cup Track Car

Reading through everyone else's threads and realised I have not updated my own for some time!! After the last track day at Lydden I had a look at the rear brakes, which had seen better days!! Rear discs with bearings, pads and a new carrier on the near side caliper.

Blanking plug fitted on the sports cat. I have a 182 Manifold, 172 Ktr sports Cat and janspeed twin box system. There is two lambda sensor holes, one at front and one at rear of the sports cat and then one at the end of the 182 manifold. I have a lambda sensor in the 182 manifold and one in the rear of the cat. I have then blanked the front one.

Some time ago I purchased a trophy replica spoiler from @GrahamS in the correct colour. It can be used with the standard boot struts and has the LED brake light from the lower spec spoilers, which I much prefer over the Cup one. Looks really smart.

I have changed the side bullets for carbon effect dipped ones, which look really smart. These were from @Aydon182

At the weekend I finally got round to fitting some clocks I purchased a while ago with carbon background and RS200 style rev counter. Took a bit of messing around with the needles, but well chuffed with the final outcome and look of them. While the top dash was out I removed the sound deadening behind the dash and the airbag ECU and OBD2 connector are now in the glovebox off the floor. Stereo blanking plate fitted.

All I need to do now is another track day as car is all ready. I will get some updated pictures with the new spoiler, exhaust system, bullets etc.

These are the new clocks.

No big plans with the car. Next if anything with be a full cage and LSD. My transporter has a tow bar fitted now so hope to get a trailer and go further afield for track days. I will do a full spec list of the car how it currently is, if nothing else just to keep track of all the mods!

Just spent sme time looking through this build. Love the attention to detail. Just a quick question though, the air duct circles in your front bumper from where your fog lights used to be.... do you have a link to them?

Hi mate. They came with another Clio I purchased ages ago. I am fairly sure I have another two in the garage though. I shall check and PM you.

Everyone loves pictures, so finally got some updated ones! Trophy spoiler, new bullets, clear side repeaters to replace the orange ones, new rear discs and pads, more stripped out of the interior to name a few bits! Drove it to pick my son up from rugby Saturday and feels good. Managed to get a nice colour coded wiper delete from @mart.z.s too which looks smart I think. Couple of bits to be powder coated in the engine bay and new coolant bottle. Tempted to get the PMS mounts and move the battery into the car. I will eventually get a PMS shifter too. I would like to do the EPAS conversion at some point and remove as much as I can from the engine bay. Anyway some pics!

It does look good without the wiper. Mine just needed the wiper back on but looks more at home on yours! Glad it got there Ok and you’re happy with it.

I did have a blank fitted before, but the one I got from you looks much nicer 👍

Some of you may have seen my recent posts regarding the track car not wanting to start! After various electrical fault finding it turned out to be the UCH at fault. I have today replaced the ECU/UCH with one I got from @GrahamS, which was rather handy as he lives just up the road.

I have also sealed a hole in the scuttle panel that has been letting water into the interior for some time! The interior is also stripped of any non essential wiring and pretty tidy now.

The tickover on the car has been annoying me for some time now and I am almost certain the timing is slightly out. It should of had the timing checked last week, but due to it not starting never made it. The car will be going to my Renault specialist next week now for a timing check.

Will update with the result of the timing check.

Timing check all done and it was very slightly out. I was not aware what plugs were in the car since the rebuild, but turns out it was some Bosch four prong things. I have now replaced these with some genuine Renault R26 plugs following advice.

Car is running the best it ever has and pulls so well through the entire rev range. The only other thing noticed was a post cat lambda sensor fault. Both sensors are fairly new and genuine. On looking at live data the pre cat is working as it should, but the rear is reading the same so I think the ktec sports cat is not working as it should. I have a lambda spacer coming, but will probably just put the decat back on!

Will continue doing a few little jobs, but nothing big planned for a while.

Have started using the Clio as my daily so it does not end up just sat on the drive. For some time its had a really annoying rattle from the rear and its definitely been annoying me on the way to work the last week!

Have checked various things, removed heat shields, checked everything is tight etc etc. Nothing really stood out. I did find the radiator bung was slightly loose while checking the car over so tightened that up, was bit of a result. I was almost certain the rattle was coming from the NSR. On my way home Tuesday it turned into a knocking and rubbing noise, so even more annoying and a bit worrying.

Had another look this morning. There seemed to be a lot of movement in the slider pins on the RNS caliper and the piston seemed very slightly seized. I was able to rock the caliper much more than I should.

In my spares I had a used caliper to try. Cleaned it up a bit, fitted and bled it. It's not is the best of condition, but all the sliders were moving freely and I got the piston winding in and out. I just wanted to eliminate that as the problem before getting a refurbished caliper.

Took for a drive and no rattle, yay! Where the car is all stripped I think the knocking of the caliper was being exaggerated and has slowly got worse. I am surprised how poor fitting the slider pins were and the amount of noise they were making. I think the new caliper is binding ever so slightly so will see how I get on over the next few days. If no good I shall get a refurbished one to match the OSR. I may send them to MS Custom engineering for a lick of paint and refurb.

As its is now being used for a bit as the daily my plan is to swap the doors over for the original ones with electric windows. No water leaking inside now so I plan to fit the front section of carpet, proper door cards, stereo and speakers. MPG on my run to work is about 38 so pretty happy with that. It could be better, but that means slowing down 😂

Happy New Year. I hope to get the car to a few more track days this year all being well.

Well my 330i sold today so I am back with a Clio daily. Was gutted to sell the 330, but was costing a fair amount with my 300 mile weekly commute along with the tax and I have my transporter camper on the drive doing nothing! The sensible side of me has kicked in!

Anyway some of you may have seen that I have been breaking a 182FF that was not worth saving and had quite a few goodies on it. The track car is about to benefit from a few creature comforts in it. The slight extra weight will be worth it and not very noticeable! I have front carpet, door cards, stereo, engine bay sound proofing and a few other little bits to make it a bit more usable on the road. I also have the original doors out of storage with the electric windows ready to fit back on. I really like the perspex ones, but when using as a road car they are noisey and impractical! A couple of threads on here have helped with the creature comfort decision.

I have also purchased another Cup! I was just going to purchase parts from it, but was offered the car complete and was too good to break. Got a few plans for it, but will prob start it's own thread. Here is a picture of them both, some of you might recognize it from on here. Is a really nice car, just needs so TLC. I also need some lowering springs for it!!

In my quest to make the track car a more pleasant place to be when used on the road I have finally got round to changing a few bits. The original doors with electric windows are back on. I have fitted the carpet from the 182 I have been breaking along with front door cards, centre console, stereo, speakers, bluetooth hands free, alloy foot plate and some new mats! I have also fitted sound proofing back on the underneath of the bonnet. Just need to fit the bulkhead sound proofing.

It has made such a difference. Have given it a quick clean and used it to drop our old tuble dryer to the tip. I need to spend another morning cleaning up the engine bay, checking over everything and a service before the next track day. The very small amount of weight I will have gained is well worth it!!

This one 😁 My first car, had it since I was 16, when it was rebuilt with a friend of mine and painted. It's a XR2, but after having the panel work done I decided not to put the body kit back on. Has the original 1600 CVH, which was also rebuilt. Been through various wheels, suspension, interior over the years. Just completed an overhaul of the underneath. I should probably start it's own thread! @Cookson

An XR just HAS to have the bodykit. And black bumpers too. In my opinion of course.

I still f**king LOVE how long the tailpipes were after the backbox ha ha. They always sounded proper fruity. Had a few Mk2 XRs in my past, even had an original Mk1 supersport at one point.

It's not had a body kit for twenty years, so definitely won't be adding it now! Is a VW colour, has coilovers, RS Turbo 88 spec recaros. The purists love it 😂

88 spec were THE ONE. f**k 90 spec with that light coloured headliner etc. I was always a huge fan of the darker grey (was the material called shark grey?)

I even had a pair on my 205 GTi

Good work. I agree the creature comforts are worth the extra weight even for a track car.

I wish I was handy with a spanner, you clearly are!

Spent the afternoon on the track car. The only thing missing from the front interior was the sill covers. I did not think they would fit, but the gap between the sills and the carpet was annoying me. I tried them today and after a bit of trimming with my mini dremel to allow room for the harnesses they now fit 😁

I also have some @Track-car-doorcards rear quarter panel cards to fit. In keeping with noise reduction in the interior as I am using on the road regularly I have also fitted the sound proofing behind the door cards. It also tidied up the rear of the car. Will add better pics tomorrow.

I have also fitted the bulkhead sound proofing back on the track car to try and reduce mechanical noise in the interior. The slight gain in weight is definitely worth it for a car used on the road!

Tomorrow I hope to fit some new rear arch liners, give the car a good clean and check over.

Rear door cards fitted, rear arch liners fitted and some new screws in the skoda splitter. Engine bay cleaned. Removed side skirts(they are screwed on, easy to take off!) and door strips to clean. Gave first clean for a while. Will look to run the DA over it later this week and give a polish. Fitted some blue bullets I bought a while ago.

Gave the track car an oil and filter service today. Got some Mobil oil on one of the Eurocarparts offers pretty cheap so thought I would try that.

20200516_124433.jpg

Been getting a bit of a grinding noise from the front brake pads so swapped them for some new Brembo pads I had. When we next do a track day I will swap them for something different as they wear a bit quick on track 😬

I have also changed the coolant bottle for a new Topran one from Eurocarparts, which I have been meaning to do for ages.

@Mbeau with the coolant bottle did you use the original cap ? I’ve heard story’s of them not sealing but don’t want to pay £50 for a Renault one 😂

The cap was not such a good fit to the new tank as the original Renault one, which I have kept just in case. I have fitted one to a previous Clio with no issues though so think it will be ok. Not taken for a long drive yet, but will by the weekend. I will update this thread if there are any issues with it.

£50 for a plastic bottle! I will put the original one in the dishwasher when the wife is not looking 😂

Topran ones don't tighten up nicely.

This one works a treat and is cheap

Few of us have used it fine @frayz

Yep. Used this one on mine thanks to @Amos91 recommendation with the OEM cap. Zero issues and as good as OEM quality.

Easy enough to swap over if the Topran one is no good. Think it only cost me about £8 on offer. Might order one of those anyway because it can go on the other mondial!

Sounds like a plan. I've found with the Toprans, as you keep tightening it pops and goes loose again. If you tighten it to just before that point they hold up fine but for a similar price it's nice to have it feel like OEM.

Love the ‘club sport’ theme for the track car.
Stripped out racers are pretty wearing to drive on the road (as I have found out) so some carpet and sound deadening make a big difference.
Really like those clocks.

Honestly it has transformed using the car on the road. The little extra weight is so worth it and some music drowns out any rattles! It is quiet enough in the car now to use bluetooth hands free.

I really liked the look of the perspex windows, especially with proper sliders, but they are not practical for everyday use imo. I will probably be selling the doors complete with perspex windows soon.

Clocks are one of my favourite upgrades. I got them from another member on hear.

Topran header tank seems to be holding up ok! Used the car everyday this week and loving it. Goes and handles so well. Replacing the brake pads has sorted the horrible pedal feel when braking and are more than adequate for road use.

When I dropped the road car off for paint I thought I might as well get a few other bits done as its same colour. The current bumper has a split below the lower grill. I had a spare bumper with some holes cut out behind the number plate in good condition that just needed paint. This has been done and collected. I also dropped off some side strips, mirror caps and side skirts, which I should have back this weekend.

The standard side strips are a matt blue so had the spare ones painted in gloss like the body.

Hopefully have time to swap bumper over this weekend. Got a spare set of xenons to fit too, but should be doing an evening track day at Brands in a couple of weeks so might hold off on fitting those!

Little update. Ordered some bits for a friends 182 and while browsing I saw a blanking plate for the stereo control on the steering wheel cowling. Will just tidy the hole up nicely.

Got round to fitting the newly painted front bumper today. Swapped all the bits over from the old bumper and a skoda splitter I had spare. Gave it a quick clean too. EPAS is now on the cards too.

Have decided to put the doors up for sale with the perspex windows in the for sale section @Deano17

I have a 1.2 Clio coming which will be donating its non sticky dash and door pulls along with EPAS. Will also be donating a few parts to another Cliosport I am currently in possession of!

Forgot to update his thread! The track evening I mentioned on the 24th June went really well. Went along to Brands Hatch with my two brother in laws who also part own this car. Car was faultless all evening and the standard Brembo pads held up fine, but do loose a bit of bite towards the end of a session. Fitted the Speedlines with R888's on and grip was amazing. Had a play around with the suspension settings too.

Got another track evening tomorrow at Brands Hatch. I am going in the car with @Somnambulist
Fitted a set of freshly bedded in DS2500 pads today. Have also fitted a mapped ECU/UCH. Clean in the morning as not used the car since last track day. Have put my TD 1.2 wheels on with rainsports to drive there and good chance of rain. Will swap to the R888'S if weather behaves once there. Hopefully get some good pics. Really looking forward to it, rain or shine!
