Hi guys.
Not happy. Front Nearside CV joint gaiter insecure to the extent it no longer prevents ingress of dirt.
Costly job lads then? Halfrauds quoted me £150!! Said it's fixed on with a tie wrap! No idea why - never hsd work done on it but that price seems excessive to me.
Any ideas? Could I possibly do it myself?
Ta.

Don't take your car to halfrauds and let them work on it, ever lol.

As for the gaiter as above really, take the wheel off and you should see the mess and where it's come from. I used a jubilee clip when it happened to me but if you can get a proper clip then do that.

£150,
They must be fitting you a new shaft at that price,
they do take the p!ss on prices, I would be robbing you if I charged you £20.

  R5gtt, 182, volvo...
My Mot testers cool and doesn't troll me with things like that and would have put a tie wrap on there if that's all it needed.. I've been using the same guy for 12 years now

Thanks lads for the advice, just as I thought proper p!sstake!
I used them last year and it passed so thought I'd stay with em... live and learn!

I imagine the gaiter itself is ok as they only mentioned it was insecure both on the paperwork and in person.

Jubilee or boot clip then will be ok? 70-90mm jubilee size is it?

@Leo182 I went the motor factors and got a proper boot clip was about 50p and used that when i had too do a CV boot the night before my track day think the boot kit is about £8-9 and you get new boot, grease and clips, luckily the motor factors was open till 5:30. Where abouts you based it is literally a 30 minute job to change the CV boot (well i took my 40 mins on my 2nd attempt as i pulled the driveshaft out lol, luckily not all the way and it slipped back in and it was dark thats jacking too finish lol and i'm a total novice with spanners), I tried to find a jubilee clip that was narrow enough too fit in the slight recess that holds the boot on and couldn't so thats why i ended up using proper clips and using the pliers i have linked below pulls them nice and tight.

These are what you want (just not 15 lol go your local Motor factors and ask them they should have some pretty cheap) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CV-Boot-C...261?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2344e86505

Also bought a pair of these for the clips which makes sure they are secure and pulled tight http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CV-JOINT-...324?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item565b5e592c

Just don't pull the drive shaft out all the way and you'll lose no oil, I didn't when I did my passenger side boot and I pulled the drive shaft out just not all the way luckily.

H back when I was green, halfords charged me £144 for a new head lamp. Apparently my headlight had a bad light image out put and the replacement headlight that I provided with bulbs was coincidently putting out a bad light image.(and they charged me £40 to fit it).

When I got home i refitted my old failed headlights and tested them against a wall and the bulbs werent clipped in properly. Ended up fixing a £144 headlight with some pliers.

I wouldn't trust halfords to make a f@cking sandwich. Get your car to a proper mechanic and don't mention your mot to them

Bump.

Proof that Halfrauds deserve that tag and haven't a clue what their talking about.

I managed to take a quick look today at it, been raining so couldn't have a go at it properly, he reckons someone has put a tie wrap on it!!

Boot looks fine too which makes the £150 laughable!

Does anyone know what's happened to the clip? doesn't look broken as such

Thought I'd update this to show what an absolute joke Halfords are.

Passed today with my £2.50 hose clip attached! I feel like sending in a complaint though as saying £150 is absolutely scandalous.

It happened to me on my MOT too. They said I had a "servicable track rod" and a loose macpherson strut. Took it to a specialist to check it over and he said none of the sort and that everything was fine.

They also quoted me £500+ for a change in the front and rear discs & pads.

The CV boots on these are a joke. Such a flimsy method of staying attached to a hub that is forever pulling on one side or the other.
Then nice, warm CV grease drips out of the boot onto the inside of the front alloys. That cools (or gets splattered all around the alloy if its moving) and starts throwing your front wheels out - giving you vibration through the steering wheel at speed.
Crap, crap, crap design. :rage:

Can someone confirm the size of the small clip on the other side of the CV boot, not the large 70-90mm. I bought the tool above but would like to use the ear type clip not the hose clip unless anyone tells me otherwise. Nobody seems to give the size of the small clip.

Thanks for that. Doesn't seem to be a common issue. Always seems to be the larger of the clips. And buy the way, how best to remove the old clip without tearing the boot ?

Just a flat screwdriver underneath I think, Ive had original clips break off just by looking at them, failing that pliers or cut it off with a dremel carefully.

Thanks for your help once again. Part of me just thinks that I should just go with the hose type clip. I wonder whether I can get some grease in through there rather than via the outer larger side. Don't really want to touch the large clip as it seems fine.

Thanks in advance.

A chap I know sends his cars in to a Halfords Autocentre and rarely has a problem. I doubt they intentionally employ incompetent mechanics, so it's just a luck of the draw whether you get a decent tester or not.

I hear they do MOT's for around £25, and I've 4 cars which need MOT's in the next 6 weeks so I may give my local branch a try to see for myself.

@Richy182. have you used Taunton's Autocentre/heard many nasties?

Going in for an MOT this afternoon, and just did a once over the car and i have the same problem. Noticed grease on the inside front drivers wheels, looks like a loose jubilee clip on the cv boot spilling grease everywhere.

I've not heard any bad things about the one in Taunton, but have never used it myself so couldn't give an opinion. But as above posts have said I'd probably stick with an actual garage with a decent reputation.
