Moving from hand to machine...

Some help here please!
Hopefully be in possession of a DA by chirstmas, already had my car machined about 6 months ago so there isnt any heavy swirling so would be using it for a big yearly detail and doing family cars (eventually)

Looking at a few of the kits on CYC and thinking since i dont really require any real abrasives, would i be best buying a very light abrasive polish/glaze to keep the finish pretty damn good or just use the heavier polishes in the kit less often.

Talking about frequency, i would want to use the DA as much as possible to make life easier for me but i know you cant go every few weeks attacking your car with the machine so what products would any of you recommend as best for maintaining and light swirls rather than heavy correction?!

best to get a scrap panel to start with to practice?
AND....kestral or G2220?!

Sorry that looks like a huge mess, hopefully got my point across...

the Ultra detailing machine is great for newbies as its a random orbital polisher meaning that you are less likely to burn through the paint than a rotary polisher. My brother got one in a kit with a sonus bundle and in my opinion its a great starting kit especially for beginners with everything playing on the safe side interms of abrasive levels. combine the kit with some autoglym super resin polish and some p21 carnauba wax and your on to a winner.
have a look at a detailing thread me and my bro did using it

yeah the kits i looked at on CYC were the sonus kestral and g220 bundles, this is what my car was done with before actually.

you mentioned SRP, applied by machine? got loads in the garage, could be good for interm details where i only need light abrasion? dont want to be taking layers of paint off too often!

thanks for the reply, daniel your reply was useless...but did make me laugh ;)

SRP works better by machine than it does by hand even - lovely product by machine, leaves a great finish, but expect it to do any real level of defect correction. You will remove very little clearcoat with it.

I would not worry about getting scrap panels if you just using a DA type machine, just be sensible with pad choice and polish and be careful near edges. Common sense and you will be fine.

regarding pad choices though, the CYC sonus bundle has cutting pads? or are they to go with each stage of product? (i.e SFX-1,2....)

thanks for all the input!

David @ wash n wax..he'll sort you out mate..

G220 or PC IMO.
need to see him soon for other things, never thought of that!
tuition?!

was looking at the kits purely because it would be as a christmas present and easier to get

hehe thanks as always Alan I know I can always count on your support ;)

The Sonus kit would be perfect for you by the sounds of things. The abrasives aren't very aggresive on scale of things as they break down quite easily which is why I always say the SFX kit is a ideal starter kit.

Even the cutting pad isn't harsh on the scale of things so you will get use out of the pads. The pads are polishes were designed with ease of use in mind.

Sonus SFX-2 and SFX-3 will gives bags of gloss. SFX-3 amazes me every time how glossy it finishes. You could use that as often as you liked without any noticable clearcoat removal.

Agree with Rich also, SRP between polishes is spot on, and something I keep meaning to get added to the store.

Give me a bell 01484 841444 (8-5) if you need a complete run down on the differences between all the kits and polishers.

Cheers Tim

i dont like the sfx polishes.

I found it dried up far too quickly by machine for my liking.
ordering the mezerna 250ml polish kit from clean your car in the next week :)

Ah Tim its been a while...hope business is well.

Only reason i recommended David is because he's a good mate and sorts me out and he's local to myself and Fraser.

Tell you what Tim, give me a price for a full set of SFX pads along with polishes, via PM if need be.

Cheers

Alan.

thanks all....im reckoning those 250ml bottles wont last very long?

tim: thanks, the ability to use it often and not take off lots of paint is ideal. whats the SFX like on porshce paint, isnt it alot harder?

250ml of Menzerna will do a fair few cars, you need very little of it, 2-4 pea sized blobs easily do a normal sized panel - eg door or wing

I did my car 4 times with some 250ml gloss stuff and only used 1/4 of it if that :)...

AFAIK porche paint is proper hard so u might need something abit more aggressive, but again im not a pro so probably wrong:rasp:.

however what i would do if i were you is try the SFX (make sure you work your way up from less abrasive>most and see which is most effective, when it starts removing the swirls stick with that polish) and if it doesn't work go for some menzerna :)

im no pro either! :)
as i said i dont need abrasives my paints still really clean.... so start from SFX-1 or from 2?!

to be safe i start on the least abrasive (so 3) then if that does nothing work back (2,1) untill it does something.

Tim,

turns out my girlfriend has gone for the g220 kit (from your shop) the complete meguirs one.
how does this one translate to my original question, which combo would i need for light correction and lots of gloss and can be used fairly regularly (like you said the sonus SFX could)?

Cheers Fraser

I tried the Megs 83 + 80 and hated it if that helps. Menzerna and/or 3m are decent.

lol thanks! well i dont really want to sound ungrateful and ask her to send it back or anything, cant be that bad can it?!!

oh crap didnt realise you had the megs kit with it.. sorry. I just saw G220

Each to their own i got megs as on detailing world it was recommended. But i just couldnt get immaculate results with it. With enough practice im sure it will be fine.
TBh alot of Pro Detailers still use megs.

nice backtracking!!
well i dont tecnically have it, she just said what she got as she knows i am quite particular! would exchange it for sonus kit and save her a tenner, but its awkward!!

lol what i said is true tho'
Megs 83 + 80 are supposed to get good results and im sure they do, i just didnt like working with them. But as i said alot of ppl on DW use it so it's prob just my lack of skills

thats cool, well thanks anyway!!

i do prefer sonus tbh but the megs bottles in the kit are huge so if they are good theyll last! regarding pads, how long would they last. its it better to err on the side of caution and replace them each time.

ill have a porsche, jag, my clio and my bros polo to do hopefully if i get some confidence!

Just wash the pads out well after -I have some that are 4 years old and still good as new.

just with water? take it you cant wash?!!

i dont need heavy correction i reckon il just be using speed glaze and polishing pad.
the other polish that comes with the kit, dual cleaner/polish is that aggressive rich?

Nothing wrong with the Megs combo of #80 and #83.

Megs now rate the cut of their polishes from 1-12 (12 being the most abrassive).

Speed glaze is rated at 4, #83 cleaner polish is rated at 6.

so they arent that different in terms of abrasives then.

so if you dont mind...does this sound ok:

start with #80 on polishing pad then if more cut needed try it with #83?

thanks for the advice everyone

  106 GTi
Try the 80 on a polishing pad and then the 80 on a light cut pad before stepping up to the 83.

now apparently i have the sonus kit of polishes aswell :) (SFX-1......)

Can they be used ok with the megs pad? which SFX is most like the least abrasive light cutting megs glaze?

1 is the most "aggressive" and 3 is the least :)

You can use them with those pads they all do the same thing!
