MPG of 172

  205 mi16
Hi,

Currently thinking of changing my GTI-6 to something thats bit better on fuel. Was looking at 106 gtis however looking through the clio 172s found claims that they can reach around 35 knocking about and 40 on a run. Are these claims correct? Clio much better value for money compared to the 106s for sale.

i get 37 mpg in my 182 on a run, can get around 33 mpg around town driving tidy

I get 35mpg round town, that's driving fairly carefully most of the time but still having the odd blast about. It's easy enough to get 40+mpg on a run too.

You have to remember that when a manufacturer makes a claim of a certain MPG, they put the car on an airstrip with no wind, zero humidity ,nothing in the boot,no passengers, windows up, air-con off and does a steady 56mph (optimum fuel consumption at this speed)

Then print this in there glossy magazines, im not saying its not accurate i just think realistically your talking an average of 33-34, its to tempting not to hammer it lol

I always thought they were tested on a rolling road :approve:

trip computer runs off ecu so is about as acurate as you'll get.

i average 30ish in mine having blasts and driving sensible, ive had 38mpg on the motorway though!

  Mk4 .:R32
I average about 30 MPG over a week, but mainly booting it down A roads and country lanes. Get about 40+ cruising on the M'way though

  ph2 172
I normally average 36 to 38 mpg with a mix of driving ( don't do much town driving tho' ). Motorways trips always over 40mpg.

  Clio 172 mk2
Consistently getting over 30mpg at the moment and 40/45mpg acheivable on the motorway cruising steadily.

  BMW F21 125d
Round town, 33-34mpg average all day long. On a run 40mpg is acheivable easily. Heavy right boot can alter this though.

It's actually done on a rolling road type apparatus, and it's a mixture of simulated town / county road / motorway driving. But because there's no wind resistance, etc, etc it's pretty much boll**ks. Apparently the testers tend to drive proper carefully as well (surprise surprise...), to get the figures even better. It's the same for every car though, so it's more a means of comparing one car to another rather than saying "this car can do XXmpg".

The 172 is f**king good for the performance. Not sure I can think of any other car that can do over 40mpg quite easily that is sooooooo much fun to drive... :D

Most manurfacturers get computers to control the accelerator etc since testers arn't consistant enough.

Can anyone honestly say that they have had more than 350-390 miles to a tank of fuel from there 172? All this piish that you can get 40mpg, yeah its possible but hardly from a sustained run!

Its no f**king TDI!

Mine averages 28-30 in town 40-44 on motoway never seen 35 + in town !!:S

  MK2 172
No more than 25 MPG around town and 35 MPG on the motorway. Don't believe what the trip counter says because mine always over states the MPG by at least 3-5 MPG. Bit suspect of people who claim nearly 40MPG for the 172 as I think they are getting the figures from the trip computer.

  Iceburg 172FF
30.4 mpg im getting out of mine at the mo, but i do have a heavy right foot and like to make progress everywhere i go lol

Is the engine even warm when you get there? Short trips will f**k your consumption somthing rotten... :( Better off cycling it mate!

Average about 28-30mpg, town/traffic driving and a few A roads.

Motorway, more up towards the high 30's. Either way, I'm happy tbh!

Like i said in a previous post, mines normally on 34-35 mpg, but it does a lot of motorway miles.

If i only drove it weekends and evenings-B road blasts i reckon i'd be in the early 20's.

  Clio Cup 172, Mk2 Escort
Only picked my cup172 up 2 weeks ago and im getting 38.6 mpg average over 1000 miles calculated from full tank to full tank so measurements are accurate, obc reading much the same. Same old story every driver is different on my golf gttdi i can beat the manufacture figures but on my company astra sri cdti 150 i can get near vauxhalls figures.
