My 182 is not right

My 182 is making a really srange whistleing noise and smelling very hot.
The smell and noise seem to be coming from the alternator area. Any ideas anybody, and if it is the alternator would this be covered under warrenty?

I should also point out that the car is driving fine and no warning lights have come on on the dash

dont understand what you mean by smelling hot.:S The whistling however is probably the normal whistling all of them have.

'Smelling hot' ie smells like burning and going to catch on fire!! How else can I describe the word Hot?
A supercharger whistles less than my car at the moment!

Anyone got a sensible reply to my problem?

best bet is to get it booked in to be sussed out.

a lot of issues with the 182 usually come with a number fo lights being illuminated and issues with power etc.

edde or fred may be able to help you.

Run the engine till you smell the burning and then touch the alternator with the "ENGINE OFF" and take care not to burn yourself. If it is hot then that is your fault. Remember various parts of the engine will be hot.

faulty alternator, do not drive it as it could break, aux belt could go in to the cambelt then your not going anywhere fast.

Lol.... poor dave. I thought it was perfectly sensible. The type of smell might determine what the problem is. Although im not really sure what the prob might be and would best give it to renault to sort under warrenty. Show them what you mean, preferably with this dodgy smell still there so the mechs can experience it.

Do you know if the fan works ?

Is the whisteling coming from the engine? ( can be wing mirror)

When was the aux belt etc changed ?

sounds like mine did a while back! ended up on mine being an aux belt tentioner pulley, but i have seen water pumps whine like this aswell (not renaults).

smelling hot is abit worrying though but its a gotta smell/see it for a diagnosis!

no worries. exactly where is the smell coming from, and when does it do it? After running for a while or as soon as car is started?

Are you riding the clutch, dont be offended, I dont know your driving style.

check the oil too, mine started to smell a bit after I had run it for half a mile with no oil in.

I notice the smell in the car when I come to a stop at a junction etc. Also it stinks around the alternator but the alternator is not hot!! The oil level is fine and I never ride the clutch, I have done 30K plus miles in this car and never had a problem before. Will let you know how I get on!!

Probably the aux belt tensioner or idler if its whining. The bearing has probably collapsed if its getting hot, I wouldn't drive it too much if it breaks things will get a lot more expensive.
