My 225 cup.. ideas needed please

  Ford
Hi,

Basically I've been hovering around this forum for about 6 months reading about all sorts and the humour has me in stitches, I had the intention of getting a Clio sport until a 225 cup came up for a good price with only 65K on the clock. Needed a good clean and a service so it's had a valet (just so I can see the potential) and had the belts done and main service. Had a carbon clean which seems to have been a waste of money, and had a remap. So I've chucked a grand at it in the first 6 weeks. The remap still needs to be checked on the rolling road when they get it back, but said it should be roughly 260bhp. It's only mod is a ramair panel filter.

At the min I'm still an apprentice so I can't afford anything drastic or to have all the bits done in one go but what I want to do at the min is:

Centre caps
Renault sport mats
Machine polish
New brake lines/pads

I have been following other people's threads with great interest and taking notes, so just want some opinions on what tyres are best, I've got Goodyear f3's on at the min with plenty of life but when they do need replacing if the michelins are better? And what brake lines would people reccomend along with common mods I.e anything worthwhile, I've heard about the airbox mod but also read about heat soak so I decided, the main thing though is sometimes it feels rather sluggish and very occasionally idles quite rough or hesitates to return to normal idle revs and wondered if this could be down to the injectors.l, or any ideas of what could sharpen up the throttle response, without going down the 630cc injector route. Before the so called carbon clean I had seen 42mpg on a run and can't get above 38mpg now so anything that can potentially improve this would be most welcomed. I've also fitted an aux cable to the basic stereo for now to get me by but in the not too distant future would like to upgrade and improve the sound quality, but keeping the stalks still on the wheel. Eventually it will probably need a few areas spraying but that's just me being picky, stone chips etc. If anyone could reccomend places to buy Renault parts at good prices it would also be much appreciated, I'll check back what I've written when I get home but at the min this is just a quick few ideas I've been thinking of

Capsicum red, nice.
Rough idles could be spark plugs, coils, injectors, lambdas or a compression leak. Any of the above really and more.

I'd start with plugs, check if they were done on the service. Did they do the oil and filter on the service. With a Gsf or euro car parts discount code it's all cheap stuff to do.

At 65k it could still be on the original plugs and filter..

Modern petrol engines really don't need carbon cleans. They run clean anyway. Diesels I can understand because of all the carbons and soot. Seem to be all over FB at the moment carbon clean specialists, placebo affect for most people I expect.

Have you check the front swivel hub bearings as they are prone to play on these cars.

Regarding tyres personal choice depending on your driving plans. I'd go premium, Michelin, continental, yokohama as they are great handling cars don't want to waste it with plastic tyres!

Keep the updates coming. It's a useful log for yourself if nothing else.

Thanks for taking your time to reply to all that mate, the spark plugs were done on the service, and oil and filter was done too, hopefully it's nothing too serious, it's only occasional at the min so I'll try and get a diagnosis. And I see what you mean with the carbon clean, the next day it felt normal again to me so money wasted really. I haven't checked the swivel hubs but I will do so, cheers for the heads up on that. And I'll have a look at reviews when the time comes for tyres, still got lots of life but read that the goodyears aren't quite as good as the competition at the min, I don't thrash it to death that much so will be fine for the grip I need at the min

Managed to get some of the genuine led boot lights for £10 off a forum so will look forward to fitting them And a Renault elf sticker for the back window. Planning on taking the car to Mark Black in the next few months for a full check over and see if it needs anything. Definitely want new brake lines so they will be done then

At 65k it could still be on the original plugs and filter..

Which filter is going to be original at 65k? Other than the fuel filter all the rest should have been replaced multiple times by now?

Who did the belts out of interest?

It was done at Silverdale motors, in Newcastle-under-Lyme as it's the best place I could get for the price, paid £650 for all the belts to be done and cabin/fuel/oil filter etc with plugs. Was going to take to Rentec in Llandudno but it meant booking a day off work and I don't have many spare till April, otherwise others were charging at least £100 more. The fella that did it has done a decent job as far as I can tell so I'm happy

The injectors on the megs are a known weak point. You can replace al 4 for around £160. Its common for the megs to cough on idle when injectors are failing.

ah ok I could probably do with replacing those I think, my Toxic fume light has come on again today (EML?) on the way to work, so gonna have to get it diagnosed sooner rather than later now, is there a place you would reccomend to get the injectors from?

  Ford
That sounds like a good idea, I'll send him a pm after work, is there anywhere you would reccomend getting the new ones from?

Thanks for the tip, always handy to have some experience to know these things! Are there usually any other symptoms of failing injectors that you know of other than the idleing? It just feels rather sluggish to me and eats fuel at the min
