My Dads '89 XJS V12 Convertible

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
the XJS is the first car I ever loved. This was my stepdads in 1981:

That cabriolet is stunning, I have so much want for on! My uncle bought one about 10 years ago when he retired, that turned out to be an ex press car (c-reg) but he didn't really get on with it sadly.

These have "in board rear brakes" the hand brake pads are very small and can brake if the car is moved while the brake is on. (the foot brake uses the pads which are in the calipers)

"In board" means that the rear discs are fitted to the flanges out of the diff, then the drive shafts are bolted to that which go off the the hubs where the wheels are bolted to. :)

Bloody hell. I'll never, ever complain about swapping the rears on my 182 again. ;)

I've seen something similar to that before. One of the cars on Wheeler Dealers had one like that - and I'm sure that was a Jag too.

I know of a few xjs specialists. Sale and service if you want me to dig out the details.

Hiya dude,

Yeah if you have some details of a specialist for servicing etc it would be great. Sales won't be any use to me though!

That is stunning, Would love of these to float about in but I'm thinking the fuel bill will be worse than the Trophy

  Whichever has fuel
I had a 4 door saloon XJ12. I appreciate it's a completely different drive to your Dads convertible but it was awesome. Could do a rolling burnout from 30mph! lol.

That is a big regret selling that. I just didn't realise how rare they were. Bellend!

Sorry mate i don't and yes it is a strange way but its the only way as the hand brake is on the right hand side between the seat and the inner sill i believe?

As i said if it sat up when on then it would be in the way.

If we got an Aston sent in by the AA it would always say on there report that the hand brake was broken....lol

Your welcome. :D

Pull brake up, press button then let back down.

Should be off.

To put back on, just pull brake up but the lever will come back down it the "out of the way position"

You're a legend dude! Had a quick try after work and got the hang of it, works as it should too so luckily I've not snapped/damaged anything.

Have been looking through the paperwork tonight, found the original sales brochure for it, all the old MOT's, only a few years where it wasn't done. All the old tax discs, service book, handbook with all the business cards in etc!

Going to sort insurance tomorrow if I can, then book it for an MOT and then sort out the service parts, and try and get it out for a decent run before the weather starts getting a bit worse.

Around £40k I think. It has a few one off extra so technically there isn't another of this spec anywhere in the world from the factory apparently too.

My dad always said it was between this and a second hand GT40 - imagine what that would be worth if he'd bought one of them and only done 8k in it since '89!

  A special one.

Great news on sorting the hand brake, this place literally will never fail to amaze me. On a Clio forum, post up a general thread about a 1989 Jag and mention a fault, random member gives you advice on how to solve and it's sorted.

Exactly, this is a great place for knowledge on almost any subject, and some good banter along the way!

Managed to get the car MOT'd today, went straight through with no issues at all as expected.

Insurance have done me over unfortunately, I turn 25 in December and from then I could insure it for £205 a year, however it has just cost me near on £800! Although I guess for a £20k car with no NCB (all on the M3) on a 5.3L V12 it isn't too bad. Roll on next year.

Car is so nice to drive, been a nice day so had the roof off cruising around at 8mpg!

Hopefully a good proper service and check over next week and try to give it a good few runs out before the weather turns worse.

For saying how few miles it's done it's surprising how many people know it as my dad's car :)

8mpg was me taking it slowly too, plus it's a little starved of fuel! Although it was short journeys, I'm sure it used to get 17mpg on a run!
