Need a 172 Gearbox rebuild !!

Hi Guys,

After spending an obscene amount of money to get a camshaft oil leak sorted and other problems in the 15 months I have had our 172 for the 5th Gear went on Sunday and I now have a clicking sound only in 5th gear.


My mechanic has stated it is the gear box, I have been quoted £600 + Vat for a full Gearbox rebuild and then £150 for removing and installing the gearbox.

Is the above a reasonable price for the rebuild?

I am not sure what the issue is with the gearbox but it was making a whining before the issue came about, again only in 5th, I would buy a second hand gearbox but with spending so much money on the car lately i am needing to reduce the risk of something else going wrong.

I am located in Bedford so any help would be greatly appreciated!!

For information i have put below what has been done to the car recently (over the 15 months i have owned it):

1. Camshaft oil leak (Timing, aux, accessory belts replaced) June 2012 (£1086)
2. As a result of the above being down the Alternator jammed and the car jump a tooth on timing belt. June 2012 (£560)
3. Still had an oil leak from camshaft that degraded the timing belt, this time 2 tooth jumped and there was valve damage the garage fixed under warranty. September 2012 (Warranty)
4. Had a full service in December 2012, this time at a different garage, there was still an engine oil leak from the same place and a gearbox oil leak. (£200)
5. May 2013 the camshaft oil leak was finally resolved by a competent garage (got 50% of the bill back from the old garage). (£1009)
6. June 2013 i am advise the gearbox needs to be replaced or needs to be rebuilt.

I'm inclined to get a new car at the moment and this might actually be up for sale at the end of the evening depending on whether i can get the bill down to resolve this. My partner wants to get rid but with the amount of money spent on this I am of two minds.

As I said earlier, any help would be excellent.

Get your mechanic to take it out then send it to Agency transmissions, even the worst box I ever sent them only cost me 275, and that was PROPER knackered.

Cheers Chip, I am assuming i may have been quoted the worse case scenario then for the rebuild, the price you have quoted was this because you knew the guy as in mates rates or just was you were changed?

Didnt know them at all mate, thats all they charge anyone anyway.

Cheapest one I have had done was only 150, and that included fitting a quaiffe diff, as the damage to the box was small.

Thanks for the info, I just need to pluck up the courage to spend some cash to get the job done and see what the rebuild price comes back as.

Lol, website no, Martin hasn't got time for all that sh1t. Once it's out, he will only charge for what needs doing, so no set charge.

But these are the boys, and I think you can now arrange a same day turn around, so if you get it there, you go shopping, go to the pictures or whatever takes your fancy, then pick it up in the afternoon.

But could be buying more trouble, it's happened a few times. Sold as mint, but not so after fitting, so then you have to start again.

Can normally get a 2nd hand box for about half that, but personally I wouldn't recomend just fitting it without having it checked over (ie rebuilt) first if you are paying labour for it to be fitted.

Hi Guys,

Thought i would give an update to the post to conclude it....

So...Martin found 10 teeth missing from 5th gear hence the racket it was making, this had happened because there was a gearbox oil leak where it has obviously overheated at some point causing the whiring and subsequent failure. Cost to resolve £275 (not bad), he has given a great service and is a down to earth guy and someone i would definitely recommend, I get 6 months warranty as well so some peace of mind, not that i think there will be a problem.

My local garage is charging a flat rate of £150 to take the box off and put it back on price break down below:

1. Gearbox removal and refitting £150.
2. Gearbox refurbishment £275.
3. Courier (to and from) £80

Total cost = £505 - Considering my local garage gave a quote for the gearbox rebuild to be £600 + VAT I think I have done quite well.

A question I do have is whilst the gearbox is out i have asked for the clutch to be checked, is there any other bits i should ask to have checked at the same time? (I know i should have asked earlier)

I would get the clutch checked like you say and probably replace the release bearing for piece of mind. It will come with a clutch kit. Also check the crankshaft seal, there circa £25 and would be stupid not to if your wanting trouble free motoring and its condition is unknown.

Unless the clutch is almost new, for the sake of 100 ish quid just replace it for peace of mind, rather than inspect and it decide its kind of ok (with release bearing as mentioned)
