Need help - K-tec or GDI

F&B

Hi People,

Need help with a decision. I've searched and searched, and waded through lots of posts but I'd be really appreciative of opinions on -

K-tec stealth (MK2) versus GDI Stealth

Has anybody compared both side-2-side, i.e. on the same car, or perhaps on one car and the other on another car parked up with it? Really keen to replace my standard one which has seen better days, but a) I want the best quality stealth I can get and b) don't want anything too noisy.

I was also considering Prospeed but the fact they aren't flow tested puts me off (please shout if I'm talking horse turd)

Cheers!

I was talking horse turd then!

Perhaps I'm using the wrong terminology (would be interested to know what terms I should be using), I guess what I'm getting at is that from what I've understood, the K-tec and GDi are built to a design which is to maximise flow for the given size of the piping/boxes, whereas something like a Prospeed is built to fit the car well and achieve a certain noise level, but isn't focused on maximum gas throughput. Does that make sense?

Ben, do you have (or recommend) anything for the 172?

thanks

TBH, all the exhausts are pretty generic, i've seen them all.

On the 172 with single exits, its pretty hard to get it wrong as there are hardly any bends and absorbtion type silencers are all generic across the range in off the shelf systems.

They will all do the same job equally well.

I'll be honest, the K-Tec Stealth is much louder than I would want if the car was my daily driver. On the track it's fine and adds to the whole setup - but it's not as quiet as they tell you when purchasing.

Not a bad thing, but it is definitely quite vocal when you use the loud pedal. Nice tickover though - and it's smoothed out the tickover revs, far less "hunting" between 600 and 900 rpm than before.

have now done 500 miles since fitting the k-tec, including 30+ laps of Combe last weekend. During this running-in period the sound has got more rorty and slightly deeper - am hoping it will settle in with more miles but as long as it passes the Db noise checks then it's fine with me.

Hmmm, ok thanks for the honest opinion. My Cup is my daily driver so your comment is putting me off the k-tec - any idea how loud the GDI is, and come to think of it, how loud the new Yozza quiet is?

Thanks

How loud a system is depends on the person listening, just take that into consideration when asking advice.

I've got the NON stealth version of the GDi system. Very pleased with the build quality. Obviously can't comment on what the stealth system will sound like but my exhaust is deep rather than raspy (I think the K-tec is more raspy than deep).

yes, perhaps I wasn;t quite clear there - as an exhaust it isn't too loud - but I drive another far more refined car normally and I wouldn;t want the stealth sound on that one.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great noise - but for my taste too loud to live with as an everyday thing.

Very personal thing, but at the end of the day any decent performance system will be louder than the stock one.

Is it boomy at motorway speeds?

How much truth is there in some of the posts I have read that Prospeed exhausts can lose you power, from what Ben said it's sounds like it can't be true. Anybody that has a had a Pro speed on a 172 - how did you find the performance compared to standard?

ARRGG why can't someone make one thats as equal or quieter than the standard one. They'd be rich.

Anybody know the standard exhaust is in DB and the new k-tec steakth MK2 for that matter?

Making my mind up over this isn't as easy as I thought. Got no issues driving to Prospeed, but at the same time I'm also happy to fit a K-tec or GDI myself. Arrghhh...

Go for the exhuast you like the sound of! Performance gain is minimal from the 200 custom to a 400 YS or BTB.

Annoys me slightly when people say that, as i'm sure there is loads of people who want it to sound standard and don't care about perfomance increase (me for example) who just want an exhaust thats not made from drinking straws.

so drrollo, what you are saying is, you'd like to see and exhaust system that increases the flow, have a life time warrenty but is heavily silenced to sound and look standard?

well if ya get in touch with them mate they might be able to offer a solution. If you can get a few people to warrant a system being developed and produced then it may well be done!! :D
