Need to buy some oil today.

Been putting this off for ages. But it's got to a point where I need to buy some oil now for my service which is due.

I know its 5W40 which is needed. But is there any brand to avoid or go for?

I remember reading Castrol was a no no for Rs engines?

Any advice?

Personally i would go for the millers CFS, the fuchs is a good oil.

ELF 5w40 is the correct, recommended by renault oil. Total Excellieum is identical (ELF brand is being phased out gradually) and same price so if o have a total petrol station near by......

I used to use Motul but the price of it is getting crazy. You need to buy 3 x 2ltr at about £25 each. I use Millers CFS now as it comes in a 5ltr container and works out a lot cheaper.

£95 for 4 oil changes does sound good though!

long as its 5-40 then you can't go wrong, its like tyres we all have our own some say some are crap other's rave about them !

make sure you have a litre for top ups too

Is this really the case, as long as 5W40 it'll be fine? I literally have no idea about oils. This is the first year I've actually gone out to buy my own stuff. Normally just leave it to the mechanic, god knows what he puts in. Probably the same for every car he does...

TBH all the oils mentioned in this thread are decent quality and you should be fine with any of them.

Im a big fan of Motul 300V myself, just because it copes so well at very high temperatures compared to a lot of other oils, useful if you dont have an oil cooler and plan on going on track.

Well yeah sure you have cheap ones and expensive ones. The oil I buy is from my local shop and he said that most of the time it doesnt matter about the brand as its the same stuff in there. They are have regs to follow so its hardly going to wreck your engine is it. I use Mobile 1 atm buts thats only cause my friend does its really cheap then I top up with a cheap brand of 5-40. It costs £8 a litre so I really don't think it matters to be honest but up to you !

Think I'd have to agree with you on that one! haha.

I'll go with the Elf if it's the one Dan is on about. If not the Shell on ECP. Already got an account on ECP and Amazon so both are easy to order with free delivery.

Thats just not true at all, although they have certain standards to meet most of them exceed them by miles and do so in different ways to each other.

I do agree with you though that in terms of the very moderately tuned engines most people on here have, any all should be fine really, and if you can get one cheaper then thats a good reason to buy as it means you can afford to change it more often, and thats the best way to be kind to your engine as oil degrades with use so the more often you change it the better.
Anyone racing on a decent budget for example is likely to put new oil in every race.

I do it 10K miles for road cars and moderately tuned trackday stuff, but I count each trackday as 1000 miles too, so if I do 5000 road miles and 5 trackdays, I change it then etc.

Im sure that even more frequent changes would benefit the engine but you would struggle to justify 500 quid a year on oil to keep a 250 quid engine in good nick, lol

On more extreme engines Ive built, Ive done it every couple of thousand miles instead, if you have 10K in an engine its cheap insurance really!

Most specialists recommend changing the oil every 6k, if for no other reason than to extend the life of the dephaser pulley

I get my oil changed every 6k so around twice a year with Danny@519. Elf oil and genuine filter used every time and costs little more than it would for a retail customer to purchase a good quality filter and oil. Lots of people neglect their cars oil, and as Danny said, changing your oil regularly keeps your dephaser pulley running well.

As stated, a decent 5 w40 is fine, I like the Titan/fusch (sp) stuff, very good quality oil

That motul isnt anything particuarly special, so dont confuse it with the likes of 300V some of us have mentioned in this thread, althoguh still fine for a fairly standard car of course.

On the contrary i find the dash reading (push the reset button while "OIL OK" is on), is actually quite accurate representation of what you find on the dipstick.

Im with you laine, I have a mistrust of electronics so like to check ocassionally on the stick but I always find it marries up with whats on the dash, so the dash is a good sanity check you can do every day.
