New 182 - broken already!

Well, I picked my 182 up this morning from motorpoint (black gold, both cup packs). Got in and drove away - and within 1/2 a mile service, ESP and ABS lights all come on.

Having seen previous threads about dashboards lighting up like Xmas trees after being on transporters I wasnt too concerned about imminent self-destruction, but as I was going past called into Renault in Derby to see if they could reset the ECU. Lad on the desk said he could get it done Monday (if I left the car!!!). So, not fancying leaving it all weekend, I took the car with me, and rang back later on - car is now going in a week tomorrow (I cant do weekdays), and I was told its ok to drive - you just dont have airbags presumably I dont have ESP or ABS either!

So have others on here had similar experiences, and was it simply an ECU reset needed, or is there a more sinister cause?

Am obviously driving very gingerly considering, but impressions so far are that is that it is a stunning car - hit 5K rpm briefly and can feel that it is really wanting to go! The alarm upgrade has been very nicely installed too (guess the fault may be down to electrical tampering by installers though!) gone for a Sigma S32, with anti-jacking etc - looks good...

Will post updates as I drive more - but really hope I havent got a dud here!

Hope you get it sorted mate - this is a really common one so cant be too serious. Be nice to the people at your local dealer - you need to establish a relationship with them as you didnt buy your car from them.

I purchased my old 172 from Motorpoint. When they installed my Sigma alarm they managed to forget to reconnect the head unit!! They then suggested I take it in to Renault to get it sorted. Obviously I just pulled it out and connected it myself!

Hope you get it sorted.

And will most likely see quite a lot of them. LOL I get on great with my dealers.

If the lights are still on, then there is a fault.

However, I had the same combo, as did Tom and a few others. simply by turning off the ignition, the fault clears and all is ok.

Bloody french cars!! Still, motorpoint is a good place to buy cars from, you can get a 172 for the same price as a 1.6 from the dealer!!

I had the same problem. Brand new car less than 200 miles on the clock when the three lights all came on. I stopped, turned off the ignition and everything seems fine now. I have now covered 1000 miles and the lights have come on 3 times and above solution solved the problem every time. I have just fitted a pipercross viper induction kit so i am reluctant to take it back to the dealer (I will probably have to remove it again for warranty reasons).

Thanks for the replies guys - and definitely the one about relationship with the dealer - I was in a slightly stressed moment when I went in first of all and they were very good with me (especially as Id not bought the car from them - although they couldnt resist a little dig at motorpoint for letting a car go out like that, which is fair enough).

When I phoned to properly book it in, the service receptionist was extremely helpful, and was keen to do what she can - she registered the car on the computer, so hopefully all is ok with warranty. Am going to tell gf to be extra nice to them when she takes it in!!!

It sounds as though most of you have had the fault dissappear after turning off the ignition - mine hasnt cleared although its been turned off and on a few times now. Guess that probably indicates there is a genuine fault rather than a glitch? Was suggested it might be a pretensioner connection coming loose, so will wait and see...

Otherwise, it just seems like mine wants to pretend its an original cup - without the weight saving obviously!!!

Had thought the very same thing myself - unfortunate problem is that motorpoint havent given me the radio code!
Seems to be running fine, so Ill just bide my time and get it properly sorted out in a week. Now nearly hit 100 miles today and loved every one so far!
Thanks again for all the suggestions!

Sure the code aint written down inside the service book?

Inside front cover of the book with "maintenance service" written on the front?

What did it cost you? They culdnt get Cup packed cars when I bought mine - just the stndard 182.

Slightly off topic I know but..............

When i picked up my previous car from trade Sales the dash warning lights were on my Golf. Took into the VW dealership and they reset the fault. It seemed that as they leave the radios playing the cars batteries go flat. When they jump them it mucks ups the ECU.

No sign of radio code anywhere - will chase motorpoint later today anyway... (dont want to have to pay to get it from Reno later)
Motorpoint and the dealer both suggested that it might be as battery needed a boost - so that might be the case then.
Cost £11999, which isnt too bad (£300 over non cupped) - they had a couple more cupped ones in (both Titanium) apparently.
Anyway - off for a drive now! :D

my car came from motorpoint, the code is on a sticker on the inside of the warrenty and service book, has a date and a vincode on it aswell, the code is at the bottom

Well, time for an update - car went in on Saturday and gf picked it up last night - and its not sorted yet...

The angle sensor (what gf saw on paperwork) was fitted and the fault was still showing - they apparently checked everything and came to the conclusion that the new part was faulty too :(. So the upshot is that its back in again on December 10th... hopefully 3rd time lucky!

Cant really blame anyone (except the component manufacturers QC department!) and we do now have the radio code ;).

Lets just hope it all works out this time!

Radio code is on a sticker inside the service book or warrenty book mate.

  182

Not certain that its similar to my previous car, a 206GTI. But with a sequence of operations ie. switch ignition on for 10 seconds, then switch of for ten seconds, then switch on and start without touching accelerator, let it warm up then drive and get it up to 4K revs for 5 seconds etc etc, and this would re set the engine management system, and save the cost of a dealer diagnosis.

Cheers

Hello mate, my new 182 had the same fault. Its a simple fix. The brake light switch needs adjusting, when you press the bake pedal the brake lights come on and a signal is sent to the ABS control unit. In this case the signal to the ABS unit is getting there too early and confusing it, this in turn gives a false alarm.

Ask your dealer to set the switch up properly.

I have had mine for over a week after the fix with no problems.

Interesting - Ill tell them this when it goes in next, and see if it makes a difference. It does actually make sense as the warning lights first came on under braking if I remember correctly...

Thanks also for the tip Unthank - it went into the dealer and they did the ECU check/reset and diagnosed a fault with the mysterious angle sensor, but it may be worth investigating for future reference.

Oh - Ken, I looked in the manual/service book and couldnt see the radio code (think motorpoint short changed me there!) but gf managed to get it when she took it to dealer... but thanks for the tip!
