New brakes fitted..

  Renault Clio 182
I fitted my new front brakes at the weekend, Brembo HC's & Ferodo DS2500 pads. How long do they usually take to bed in and reach their full potential?

What did you do to bed them in? Did you read the instructions that came with the pads?

I did something like 50-20 mph hardish braking about 20 times. Job done. Make sure you let them cool down before you stop.

Yep I followed the instructions, the brake pads were smoking quite heavily when i stopped. The brake pedal still feels a bit spongy at the mo tho, will this stiffen up eventually...?

did you let them cool down? Brakes might need bleeding slightly as fluid might have boiled a bit when braking. Did you get fade towards the end of the runs?

How do these DS2500 perform? apparently they're the bees kness lol.

Bedding in: Light braking for 300-400 miles :p

Got the same fitted today.... whats everyones opinion? Light braking for few hundred miles or 10 or so harsh stops?

I put DS2500's on my 172 in february. did a track day the week after at oulton and they were awesome! If the pedal is still spongy I suggest you get the fluid changed. Its likely its been in there a while and absorbed water. Get a good Dot 4 or Dot 5. I've got standard vented front discs and the brakes never fade, even after a lot of really fast driving with lots of very hard braking.
Mine is running Toyo T1-R tyres as well and a rear strut brace. It corners like its on rails.

Bed them in gradually as per the instructions. Dont get them too hot first time out or they will glaze. I took mine up the M6 on a long run and bedded them in that way.

I am really impressed with the brake pads/discs so far. However, they have just started to squeel today, what would the reason be. I copper greased the pads as u should do, and they have been fitted correctly. Please can you help?

You should never copper grease pads or any other brake component.

They will squeal as they build up a layer of material on the disc surface. Trade off for better brake performance is noise and wear rates.

I think he meant putting copper grease on the back of the pads :) - I HOPE!

As I said you should never copper grease pads or any other brake component.

Modern brake components run at very high temperatures and copper grease is not thermaly stable. When heated it will spread and it will make its way onto the pad face/disc. At best this'll knacker the pads and reduce brake performance, at worst it'll cause an accident.

Copper Grease on pads started in the days of 80mph Vmax's and asbestos pads. Modern brakes can generate several hundred degrees of disc temp on a standard boggo road car!

They say its a bad day if you don't learn something new every day.

I'm only up 2 hours and I'm having a great day so far lol :star: - you should see my brake thread

ok, so what do you recommend then???? Copper grease was put on the side of the brake pad holder, not on the pad it self.

Try filling a bit more. They will have expanded when they got warm. Tiny bit of copper grease on the two filed edges and a little on the back

it is, but in small amounts. The last thing you want is to get it on the discs, so any overuse might stray onto them. But you barely need any to be honest.

Even the most minute amounts will spread when heated. It's not worth it.

3M produce a self adhesive rubber pad backing which'll do the same job without risking brake contamination. Or just accept the fact that a brake pad with "Motorsport Use Only" stamped on the box will probably squeal!

Just got mine off the courier :)

There are 2 "fixing screws for the Brembo HC discs - should there not be 4? :S

  Clio 172 Cup
The clamp load is supplied with the Wheel nuts, those fixings only help to hold the disc in place while the wheel is fitted. They aren't responsible for any loads.

its about the only thing he can do right! haha

anway, stop moaning about it and get the breaks off and get the new ones on!
