New car / Old car

  Fiat Coupe 20v turbo

Ive been tempted by the 03 172 Cups that are available at dealers for around 10k at the moment. My williams costs a fair whack to run and sometimes think Id be better off with a new car. But I have reservations about getting a loan and being in debt again...I like having money in the bank. Does no one else have a problem with having a large loan or finance agreement? Hmmm...

yes i used to feel that if i could not pay cash for it then i would not have it and there for never brought a new or nearly new car hence the 205GTIs iv had and now my 16valve, but the other month while looking at MR2s and and other cars all going for about 6 to 9k for something thats 7+ years old i thought f**k it! pay afew K more and get something brand new after all you only live once and its only money you will earn more and for me i might not have the chance to buy a brand spanking new car ever again.

so i ordered a brand new 182 due for dilivery on the 15th july, i could have paid cash for it but im putting 8.5k down and getting the rest on finance and leaving afew K in the bank for other stuff that i might want be it fir the car or something else.

sometimes i keep asking my self if iv done the right thing but then i just think how much fun i will have over the next 2, 5 or more years driving and moding the car.

if you want my advice save as much as you can to put down on the car and get alittle on finance or a small loan from the bank, if i could only have put 3 or 4k down and the rest on finance i dont think i would have dont it tho

I think you might be right there Daz but I guess every simple job on a Cup doesnt turn into a marathon like my williams because of corroded/seized parts and just generally being very high maitenance. Theres also the dreaded rust on the bodywork too, sorting that seems like a losing battle sometimes

i felt the same way mate but after i went to the renault dealer the figures wernt that scary i pay 122 pound a month with 1300 deposit

its only a 1.2 dynamique but its an ace feeling haveing a brand spanker car

my advice is do it i havnt regret it :)

Id be careful Martin. Ive thought this a few times (including last year when the Cup was still a new car), but have shied away.

Ive just spent £600 on my Williams over the last few days, but fortunately Ive got a nice example that hopefully wont need much attention for a while again.

The problem with committing yourself to finance is that while it gives you regularity, it also means that you must have a secure job and that things can get very tight during the months that you need new tyres/servicing/holidays.

On the other hand, there could be a point when youre spending as much on the Williams as you would be on a new car. I know the Willy wont depreciate, but spending money on repairs has the same effect on your money!

Good points Ben, other points to note include that you hear about the newer clios needing to use there warranty alot, second hand parts are not as readily available, and alot of the work needs to be done by renault which means big bills! id stick with the Willy, cups are gonna carry on depreciating i reckon!

i have had my 1.6 dynamique since jan 03 and had no probs at all, my old mk 1 used to cost on average 40-50 quid a month to keep goin due to the age and things breaking all the time.

now i pay 150 a month and have no probs and dive a much nicer car, with the old car i was just chucking money away, id rather be paying a car off (via loan) than just paying out to keep it running.

not to mention the piece of mind and time saved getting it fixed, no more sourcing parts, fighting rust and water ingress therough windows, endless problems with the old car..

you only live once

dont what feels best and have no regrets

if every one lived without risks or new stuff how pants would it be

i try and get everything but sensibly, i dont know how i manage it but i do

new clothes trainers and vinyl each month, mod my car each month etc

make it happen and do it!
