NEW dephaser pulley still noisy?

  Renault Clio 182
Clio 182, 2004 '54 plate.
Wondering if someone could point me in the right direction... Had new belts & dephaser pulley fitted 2 months ago by a garage who has the specific tools for the job & as title suggests, it's now noisy! I'm no expert but the noise is coming from the left hand side of the engine and is tappy/whirring worryingly loud. Could this mean the timing was not set correctly? Or that the whole thing has gone wrong?

Might be worth mentioning that the EML came on around 2 weeks ago showing knock sensor although at the time I put this down to tesco fuel (cleared code and it's not reappeared)

Thanks in advance for any help, love from a girl that really cannot afford the repairs on a clio sport lol!

Has it been noisy since they did the change, if so, take it straight back to the garage that did the belt change (although at 2 months down the line its not ideal).
Theses engines will never be described as sounding nice and smooth, and often can be compared to a Singer sewing machine IMHO :tongueclosed:

Does the noise disappear if you raise the revs above 2k?

Where abouts are you? I'm sure a local member would be happy to have a listen and offer an opinion

I may have to try that tomorrow, I noticed while I was outside the car while it was idling and warm. Could still hear it when sat inside but didn't try revving or anything. I'm in Barnstaple, Devon ex32 area.

No it wasn't noisy when it was first done, I've done around 1000 miles/: & yeah I know they are not the quietest of engines but this defo didn't sound right at all

Who did you have do it?
Local garage, the same one I bought it off.. He supposedly has the correct tools but never know these days I don't normally use them so will probably take it to the guys I normally use to diagnose the prob.. If it does turn out to be the dephaser.. Well I don't know yet lol x

Can you stick a video up? I wouldn't be overly surprised if they just did the belts and not the dephaser. A video would soon reveal whether it's the dephaser or not by the noise.

Will try and put one up tomorrow.. I don't think he did just belts as he showed me my old pulley. I'm comparing to videos I've looked up on YouTube but will defo try and post one!

As said my money is on water pump. a lot of garages seem to diagnose a water pump noise as other things ! Just out of intrest how much did they charge for belts and dephaser ?

Video here, hopefully works?! Yesterday it was noisy while idling but I had just stopped after an hours drive.

Can't hear it as loud on vid but was making the noise when revving at about 2k. Engine was warmed a bit here, gauge quarter of the way up.

If this wasn't a specialist garage that done the work, i'll bet two things;

The dephaser wasn't changed
The timing will be retarded/advanced

  R5gtt, 182, volvo...
I agree with everyone else that it's most likely the dephaser..

Id just slot one on keeping the 1000mile old, pulleys etc, but I can't see them sorting it FOC or a specialist swapping it out without changing the rest..

Catch 22...

Update.. Took it back to the garage that did the job, he says it's not the dephaser but rather just something rattling - nothing to worry about, it won't fail on me. His reason behind this was that it isn't loud enough to be dephaser & the noise disappears when you Rev it. Seemed like he didn't really want to know but then he wasn't really very chatty last time he worked on it either... Told him if it gets any worse I'll be bringing it back again. f**king cars!

A noisy dephaser will stop being noisy when rev'd. Its how its diagnosed 99% of the time

Take it up to @Dan@SJM

he's a dildo, plain and simple. it's not dephaser for sure but something there needs sorting out.
It`s obvious the job was not done correctly with the proper kits.
They should have been able to produce the old items, both belts, auxilary tensioner & idler pulley, cambelt tensioner & 2 idler pulley, exhaust cam nut, inlet cam bolt, cam seals & dephaser blanking piece seal.
