New Road Angel in 182.

Guys,

Do any of you have the New road Angel in the 182, if you do does it need the extra ariel or can I mount it in the square at the bottom of the screen. The manual says that there maybe problems due to having a UV screen?

Cheers

I have the older Road Angel in my 182. As Pete says keep it in the little square at the bottom of the screen and you should be ok. Mine works without any trouble without the aeriel, better than in my mk2 172 in fact.

I have my new road angel mounted here and the only thing is laser detection is likely to be affected due to the wipers.

I ordered an additional ariel and it was not long enough, I got a reund and then found out they had a couple of 4 meter lengh ones instead of the 2 meter ones they advertise. I have ordered one of these for £19.95

Please keep us posted on how effective the GPS and the laser detection is - thinking about buying one but not sure which.

jaf they are spot on for all cameras, not had chance to test with laser, but will do when I get this additiional antenna so I can mount the laser lense higher than the wipers.

I emailed them asking them why my RA2 was going off at junction 35 M1 or near saying there are specs cameras when I know there arnt any, and within hours there was a reply saying that is was due to me driving over the stockbridge bypass where there are some.

One of the problems with having it set to 1000mere alert range.

LIAM 182 - you may just have stopped me going round in circles! I originally was going down the Road Angel route but then the micro road pilot caught my eye but no laser and no D2S/TSS detection so then considered the Trafcam on a PDA but too messy and no laser again. Then the Origin Blue i came up on the radar (so to speak) and nearly plumped for it but the RA2 looks a bit neater and easier to move car to car...

Whereve you mounted it and wheres the laser detector remote going (I thought it was built in but additional antenna obviously gets round this). There are loads of mobile sights round where I am - does the RA2 warn of them or are you reliant on the laser detector?

Jaf,

Ive put up some pictures of it mounted in my car do a search on my name and you will find them.

Its at the bottom of the screen in the middle and is getting signal lock on without an additional areiel. However in this position the laser detction is going to struggle IMO. So I have ordered an additional antenna (my second one as the standard 2 metre lengh still meant I could not mount it in the middle of the screen) so this time I should be able to put the road angel 2 so the laser sensor is just looking over the wipers line of sight. If you see what I mean.

As far as I know, Road angel does show typical "mobile sites" i think these are where mobile cameras have been in the past. It doesnt look out for mobile radar guns, although I think it is mobile laser guns that are used these days. The road angel 2 has two lase sensors one on the back and a small round one on the front of the unit. I have not tested these yet, as I have not managed to find a laser site in operation, and even if I do I would have to drive near the limit for the operator to bother firing a shot at my car.

I am not buying the seperate laser antenna as I dont see the point, it has 2 laser sensors built in. So I have ordered a longer wired aeirel which I will place on the rear drivers side window lodge, run the wire down under the carpet up the side of the dash and along the back of the dash down by the window then out and up to the road angel 2.

Pics will be avaialable when it arrives the aeriel that is, probably tomorrow evening, if you require them

Hope this helps

Liam

Have now fitted my RA2 and its brilliant, even better that it cost me peanuts!. Easily the best one around for user friendlyness ie I have 2 cars so transport it between them both within seconds. Laser isnt really an issue because once the unit alerts you to it 9 times out of 10 you have a ticket in the post anyway.....

Cheers

Yeah I have been reading this topic for a while and cant understand why all the worry about getting the laser detection working. Once the alarm goes off you have about 0.3 of a second to react and reduce your speed to the legal limit or your busted. Naturally this is impossible.

Now given that there is no defence against mobile laser devices you have to question the usefulness of these GPS systems. Surely they lure you into a false sense of security and make you more likely to get caught by a mobile laser device than if you had nothing at all?

I guess you have to balance up the reduced risk of getting caught by fixed cameras against the costs of buying the device, subscribing and the increased risk of getting caught by a laser device. On top of that when you leave the car you have to lug it around with you along with the front of the headunit to stop it getting nicked!

Bear in mind that if I got caught speeding it would only cost £110 - thats a sixty pound fine and my insurance would go up by fifty pounds. Now how much is a Road Angel....

Of course I wont get caught it if I dont speed in obvious places and at obvious times of day.

I might buy one if they come down in price but given that it costs nothing to look out for speed camera signs the price will have to come down a lot....

I watched a feature on 5th gear about detectors and was amzed how well they worked on laser detection. They tested it by aiming the laser at the car in front and every time the car following got an alert, so they might not be that bad at laser afterall.

The fact is though that against laser you get nanno seconds to slow down....................... get a jammer!!;)

Yeah detecting the laser has never been the problem, all the detector does is tell you that you have got a ticket. Pretty daft spending £300 on a device that tells you that you have three points and a £60 fine when you get sent a letter with the same information free of charge anyway!!!!

Your only defence is a jammer (illegal) or obeying the speed limit. If you do the latter then you dont need an expensive detector.

Why the need to speed all the time anyway? It just wastes fuel, brakes and wears out the engine quicker. If you want to really push your car then it doesnt take a mastermind to work out what roads to drive on and when. I drive like a granny and well within speed limits whilst commuting or going shopping or to the pub. When I want some fun I go out down certain country roads with no traffic in the early hours of Saturday or Sunday morning. The cops are all in town trying to stop the drunken w*nkers from beating the sh1t out of eachother and the camera partnership are all in bed or wouldnt go near a road that has two or three cars pass every hour because its not profitable!

Toypop, jammers arent illegal.............. a grey area granted but not illegal. Also the detectors are useful if you are driving places you dont know and the fixed cameras are hiding behind trees etc. Also the blackspot warning is useful, it always makes me slow down and be extra vigilent. Dont get me wrong I dont drive like a tw*t, I grew out of that a long time ago.

As you say the only guaranteed way is not to speed in the 1st place but I believe we are all guilty of that from time to time.

  Yaris Hybrid

Yes you are right in, laser jammers are not illegal in the same way that radar jammers are - not that the latter work anyway!

However if you get caught with a laser jammer you will probably get busted for attempting to pervert the course of justice or maybe even wilfully obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty? Not sure if there have been any test cases yet but I am sure they could come up with some non-motoring related law and still give you points.

You have to admit that attempting to pervert the course of justice is an accurate description of what you are doing...

  Fiesta TDCI

From my (limited) research one bloke has been done in Wales for perverting the course of justice, that said the LRC-400 is due out soon and this does actually double as a garage door opener, depending on the cost I reckon I will get one when they are released. Luckily I have an electric garage door so could kind of justify it.

could not agree with that bit more mate, i was in scotland afew times last year 1st time iv ever been, driving along dual carrageways i thought were national speed limits turns out they were 50mph roads and all had fixed cameras on, cant believe to this day i did not get a ticket, only reason i was "speeding" was cos i did not know the roads and there were no visable speed signs, if these cameras had have been working i would have probably lost my lisence.

Liam182 - Looks good, where did you feed the cables? Did you need all 5 metres. Did you get the cable from Blackspot? Finally do you have your RA2 hardwired??

Thanks.

Hey people i put the classic Road angel in my car and had to have the extra aerial................ as i could not get signal without it!!!!!! i mounted it under the rear car seats on the floor pan now it works really well and this morning going to work it picked up a mobile one at least a mile away!!!!!! im well happy with it now i will post some pics as soon as

  Ford Fiesta

Stokesey, where are you from?

I ran the wire behind the trim and carpet from the front to the back, I had about 4 inch left over from the 5 metre, its not hardwired but the only wire you see comes down the back and into a 3 way socket adaptor, no need to hard wire it. The wire goes side of boot under grill space the plastic bit, under carpet under rear seat, down side of car behind sirting of the floor up inside the rubber in door hinge then down back of windscreen across to middle of window.

They do admit that the stregh bar for reception fluctuates more using an additional antenna which it does on mine, also it takes a few mins to lock on instead of a few seconds but once it has it it has it.

Craigs cup where is the aeriel for your RA? how do you mean under the car seat??? talking about aeriel not additional laser add on yes?

Yes it is very neat.

I got the first wire from blackspot what they advertise but this is only 2 metres I phoned them up and asked to have a longer one, they say if there is enough interest they will start doing the 5 metre ones too, IMO much easier in the clios with the longer one. Just phone blackspot say you want the wire like what was sold to me they should have some left.

Liam182 Im in Northapmton.

I have rang Blackspot and I think they said, they had 2 & 3 metre cables (although they might have said 2 & 5 metre!?). I am only a few miles from Blackspot so will go up soon as I wanted to test the position of my RA2 with their laser gun (I have it sitting on the dash just by the square without the UV coating). If it can lock onto laser in its current position then I wont need the aerial.

jammers ARE illegal , trust me

172cup_nut......... on what grounds? I would be interested to see official documentation on this, also if they are illegal how do all the suppliers get away with marketing, selling and installing such products??

No ....... i had to have an extra booster device in to drag signal in so the normal aerial is still in the front window to pick up the laser traps i.e mobile speed camers and the one in the rear of my car under the car seat is for picking up GPRS which is for the fixed speed camers.............

from what they said at black spot the Road angel should pick up GPRS it has its own built in aerial but this signal is blocked by the UV windshield so i fitted this one and it works fine now...........

HHhmmmm works fine in my wifes 182 without the extra aerial. I had to play around with the unit to start with then it was fine once it got a Satellite lock. It sits just above the windscreen wipers using the cradle.

Cheers

Simon.

Stokesey it will be interesting to see if it works there, I had to have mine so low on the dash, basically sitting on the dash to get satelite reception that the laser sensor was looking at the windscreen wipers, hence I feel these could affect laser detection. let me know how you get on. Im sure my length is 5 metres though...

Craig, im sure you mean GPS- global positioning system, GPRS is general packet radio service, as in mobile internet on phones. So does this extra aeriel connect to your road angel via a wire or does it just collect and re boost the signal on its own? Its just when you say under car seat, do you mean literally under the rear car seat, how can it get a signal here?

Simon, I could also get full lock on using just the road angel 2 and its in built aeriel using the square at the bottom of the screen. But as I said it was low, if you look outside the car head on at the windscreen with it in this position you will see if it is like mine that the laser sensor is behind the wiper and hence the laser beam will not pass through the wiper so you may not get any warning at all of mobile laser traps.

Yes I know that it is hit and miss if this will help you slow down or not, but I figured I payed alot for the product which is advertised as having built in laser sensor unlike road angel 1 which you had to have an extra add on sensor, so I at least want that chance of it working.

Yes i do meam GPS sorry Liam 182 and yes the extra booster is under the rear seat................... it has a magnetic base on it so i stuck it to the floor pan........... it is connected by a thin bit of wire which....... is run under the carpet to the front of the car....... it come with a socket on the end, it then connects into the cig lighter giving you the boost........ you then connect the road angel into the same cig lighter as the booster has a cig lighter doubler on it is that better??????

Craig I wasnt been funny mate, just that I wasnt offered this antenna when I phoned them. But I came across other places selling "re radiating antennas" for about £80 instead og the £20 mine was, this must be yours then. It must have a much better aereil to get a lock on in that position, mine struggled anywhere in the car other than where I have stuck it now.

thanks

Liam

in the end craig I didnt get a re radiating one, they sound much more complex and probably better but blackspot said they dont need or do them for new road angel, so I just got the one they offered all be it with a longer lead so I could mount it here:-

P.S anyway of testing laser alert mine went off when i was fitting the antenna and put the road angel near the aeriel, it shouted SLOW DOWN laser LAser or something, Tiff did anyway.

laser pens down work obviously prob totally different frequency, but is there anything else, remote control tv units etc?

  Ford Fiesta

it took about 20 mins first time i switched it on, now it takes about 3 mins every time to get lock. once it gets lock its fine, apart from if i park real close to big buildings with the aeriel been at the back it loses signal if I reverse up to large buildings etc.

This is one thing I have noticed. In the Clio it takes about 3 odd minutes to get a lock and normally have to put the unit on the roof but in my Elise it takes 30 seconds or so? I dont have the extra cable either.

Simon.
