New Sat Nav install progress pics

  R35 GTR
Thanks to Rennie for inspiring me, I have installed the pda he sold me into my sunvisor. Advantage of the 172/182 ones is that cables can be completley hidden.

pda is in the visor, will be wiring it all up tomorrow.:D

thanks, I am quite pleased with how its turned out.:clown:

its the Rz1710 ipaq iirc, fits absolutely perfect in the gap, quite a bit of cutting is required, plus the hole for the screen needs to be in the right position.

Might need to install a speaker in here as its just loud enough, but will use the supply for the light to power a small amp.

I plan on putting screen in passenger one for my girlfriend on long journeys or big screen in glovebox, coupled with dvd player.

Dave, was looking at getting a PDA like yours. Apart from a copy of TomTom, a GPS receiver and a large SD card is there anything else i need?

Im torn between a PDA and something like the Garmin i3 right now.

any chance of seeing a pic of it behind the flap

thanks

Bit direct asking to see behind his birds flap mate :rasp:

On topic, im really not sure whether to get a dedicated system like Tomtom One or Garmin i3, or whether to piss about with numerous things for a PDA setup.

This is my third sat nav kit so far and what is needed in most cases is:

  • gps reciever
  • pda(ipaq seem the best as it takes seconds to install tomtom when it eventually crashes)
  • software (working one, some of it is a bit dodgy, but luckily this software works perfect, my last version wouldnt remember any locations I entered after i switched it off)
  • if you only want satnav, 256MB card is all you need.
  • combined power cable and link cable for pda
  • and a cradle to mount it in, or velcro to dash or use sunvisor.
All this can be had for less than the tomtom 300,500 or 700.

I have used rennies idea of sticky velcro on the back, but dont even think it needs it as it's such a good fit in there.

Got more pics coming in 5 minutes of it in the car, I was sat for an hour just figuring out how to route the wire!

anyone attached power to the cigarette lighter, by wiring it straight in?

If not i will be connecting it to the cd player power output.

very nice, you used the feed from the sunvisor light power then?

thought about it, but couldnt be arsed with it for now, would have done away with the wire to ciggy lighter though.

Love it, what an idea. i can see many people taking this on, maybe including myself.

Can any1 direct me where to get one of these sat nav set ups?

I can make these to order if anyone is interested?

Took me about 2 days to build the first one, but I imagine I can use mine as a template, so will be able to do one/two a day easily.

It is a touch screen system, only one button is needed to switch the unit on. I am going to make it so that you push the front of the visor and it will press the button to automatically switch tomtom on.

Also may be adding beading to the edge of the hole, just trying to find some that isnt black or silver.

I can get everything required for £220, which would include
  • refurbished ipaq Rz1710
  • 256MB card
  • cables reqiured + gps reciever
  • visor, cut to shape if required
This is cost price( will need to factor in labour costs), everything new except the pda which is a direct from HP refurbished one.

I dont think it would be a good idea for me to supply tomtom 5 , but this can be acquired by yourselves.;)

So how much would 1 be with labour and postage costs?

Also where have you fitted the gps receiver?

  R35 GTR
GPS reciever can be mounted in the little rectangle in front window, but i think it is better to put it on the ledge of the rear side window, it sits nicely there and gets good reception.

I can do the lot for £245+ insured postage. Usually around £8 next day delivery iirc.

Will also supply backup disc of software for the people who have already purchased tomtom 5.

I have everything here for one visor, except I dont have the pda or sd card.
I could do this for £100. This will include all wiring, a gps reciever, the sunvisor, sticky velcro and a cd with instructions and software.

If enough people want them I can order it all in bulk and do it slightly cheaper, with or without the pda.

All that is required to fit is normal tools, bit of string, soldering iron and insualtion tape. Only five wires need to be soldered.

Why do you need to solder, where do you get the power feed from and where have you hid the wires for the gps receiver if its in the rear window?

  R35 GTR
cable has to be split in half to fit through tube on sunvisor and then routed through rough a couple of inches.

gps cable runs down side of car to boot hidden away.

  R35 GTR
I think i may just wire it to the power feed for the visor lights, but at the moment the wire goes under steering wheel to cigarette lighter

I dont have the sunvisors lights in mine as ive got a dynamique?

why not get a pair of the sport ones? and unscrew your drivers side one to see if there is a cavity behind the hole to push cables into.
