New Shocks/Dampers reccomendations for 172 please

  Clio 172
Hi guys,

I have a 172 and I think that the dampers are shagged. When driving over bumps the car 'skips' and is almost uncontrollable, especially around corners. This leads me to think that the dampers have lost all of their oil. Any other thoughts on what the problem could be?

The setup on the car is stock at the moment.

I would like to get a complete new set of shocks and springs and have a budget of around 400 squids.

I am looking at mainly improving handling as a priority, however, lowering it is an added bonus! :D

Any suggestions and good places to get order some from would be gratefully received!

Thank you!

For the budget, either renue standard and pocket £200 or buy vmaxx coilovers.

if the shocks were bad they would be leaking oil everywhere and you would be able to see it, springs would show too - you sure it is them and not any bushes / bearings ?

Thanks for the replies guys, not sure about the bushes or bearings. Is there a quick way of checking them (I am new to all this so please forgive the naive questions! :S)

I have read that Eiabach springs on standard dampers work well, anyone got any opinions on this?

Not true, i've had 2 fecked shocks, one front and one rear, neither were leaking.

I have a rear shock leaking but the car is driving ok, didn't even know it was leaking until I had the car on a lift having other bits done.

I got the car from a mate whose boyfriend told me that the shocks leaked all of their oil a while ago. Unfortunately they didn't spend a lot on keeping the car in top nick so I am going through the list of stuff as I can afford each part!!

What do people think about standard dampers and Eiabach springs. I will not be able to change the ride height (not a massive problem for me). However I will not be able to change the feel of the car, is this a problem? The car is in Hong Kong and so I do most of my driving on A style roads and motorways.

Thanks guys, D
