new starter motor ph1 172

535

Car  clio 172 ph1
Had problem with my old starter so I got a new one but it wasnt engaging properly so they sent replacement but that is exactly the same anyone else come acrosss this before. Fitted old one worked again. They match up the same and everything cant work it out. HELP! !!!

Looks ok mate just doesn't make sense all 3 starters look and seem to match up just 2 new ones wont engage properly and just make grinding noise. Fit old one and it starts. Well after a few hits with hammer

Check the gearbox and starter for the correct locating dowels.

i.e the dowel may be in your old starter motor, you put the new one on and there is no dowel to locate it exactly. I have found starter motors to be VERY fussy on their location, or like you say they wont engage or that make funny noises when cranking.

Thanks for the reply the dowl is in the gearbox so know thats in for sure I reckon the pitch is wrong on the starter motors

Quite possibly the wrong starter motor, i know back in my mk1 clio days there used to be starter motors available that would both fit, one with 9 teeth and one with 10. Obviously one not working at all.

Give the teeth a count on both starters to see if they match.
