New to Cliosport! Few questions to get me started..

Hey guys and girls!

This is my first post on Cliosport but hopefully not my last! Ive been into the VW scene for a few years now but feel a change is well overdue. Seems that people are more concerned with the cars 'stance' than how fast it actually is :S...

I currently own a mk2 polo but have found myself wanting a more powerful, comfortable, modern car. I wanted something that was fast, good on fuel and insurance that also looked great. This has lead me straight to the clio 172. Ive done quite a bit of research and im pretty sure its the car for me! I love the looks and i cant believe how much power you can get for the price they are going for!

So i guess my first couple of questions are:

What are they like on fuel? I do quite a bit of motorway driving to and from uni so this is where i need it to have a good mpg. If it drinks a bit whilst blasting round country roads i dont mind.

How do people get on with the cup? Im really split as to whether to go for the cup or not. Id obviously love the air con and other comforts, but im planning on doing quite a few track days so if the cup is quite a bit faster round the track then i am willing to sacrafice the comforts! Also depends on price as well!

Lastly, things to look out for? Maximum mileage these cars are good to? Niggly problems you would look out for on a viewing etc..

Any help people can offer would be great! Cant wait to get the car now!

Thanks.

Hi there and welcome.

I haven't had mine for long but I love it, I have just a standard 172 as I love the xenons, leather seats and climate. I get on average 38mpg over a full tank, if I go on a run I have seen about 42mpg at 75. The occasional blast does drop it a little but never seen less than 30mpg really.

There are a few things to look out for, and if you join up (£12 a year iirc) there are buyers guides and everything in the guides section.

If looking for a car, make sure the cam belt has been done or that will cost you at least £600, and all the guys on here recommend getting a Renault Specialist to carry out the job as many haven't done this and seen snapped belts and other problems.

They are good fun cars but for tuning they aren't the best as you need to spend a fair bit to get any notable power.

Good car, and I love mine.

Hope this helps.

FSH is a must and lowest number of owners you can find some of the cheaper ones have a REAL hard life.
