Hello i'm Lynz

Looking at getting a clio 172 (one of the earlier reg ones ie 01/51) After a bit more info on what comes as standard on the 172's ie climate control, air con, half leather seats etc

Also anything to beware of with them when looking at them?

Cool site too btw!

Cheers

Lynz :)

172's... where to start...

Coming from an AX it'll be difficult to be specific on what to expect and what could be worth looking into. If it's over 60k miles, make sure the cam or timing belt has been changed, if not get it done. *doesn't need doing officially til 72k but it's expensive if it goes so best be safe than sorry.

Check it out for prangs (body work may be A1 but look for rivets etc that have obviously been manually screw up (paint missing or scraped from the screws)

Check the cold start noise - it's natural for it to sound like it's running on 2 cyls, when it's warm it should sound sweet.

Check the oil - if it's black, get some money knocked off. If it's golden then it's a good sign that it's been looked after.

There's tons of people on here with them so they'll probably through their opinions into the pot also.

Oh , there was a buying guide in Evo - can't remember the edition (i think it would be in the early 90's, that had some brilliant advice to buying a 172, what to look out for etc. May be worth investing £5 in a back copy.

lol mine is a forte shell with a pug xsi 1.4 engine in, so same as an ax gti with saxo vts brakes etc, pretty nippy but im sure the 172 will feel pretty damn quick in comparison.

Cheers for the info on the evo mag, might have a look on fleabay to see if old copies are on there

happens on all the forums doesnt it! Male welcomes usually stop at a couple of posts and female ones (on axoc) last for pages lol
