Newbie + Clio 172 Dyno results and questions

  Clio 172 Ph1
howdy, just signed up so a warm hello from not so warm New Zealand! I just bought a Clio 172 Ph1 and just got it dyno'd.

now I know these cars rarely make the full 169hp or whatever but mine seems way down. Got 133bhp ATW which I am told is about 154bhp at the FW. (this was also on a hub dyno so v acurate I am told)

Opertators comments were that the car has "one of the worst Air/Fuel ratios I have ever seen" lean at low revs then gets extremely rich very quickly.

really want to identify what the problem is here and if there is anything I can do to get it put right. My thoughts were one of the sensors might be broken, perhaps the MAF sensor?

Any help is good :D

  Clio 172 Ph1
hey thanks for that, guess its worth a try

anyone got any other ideas? The car is bogo standard apart from having a de-cat pipe and ITG panel filter.

  Clio 172 Ph1
Nah not yet but car is due for service as well so will probobly do them anyway. I am going to run the car into european car specialist to have them check for any fault codes etc.

making good torque though, 154.

gotta be an extra 10 bhp hidden away somewhere!

  328, MK1 Clio 1.4
Most of them make around the 155 bhp mark from what I can gather, yours ain't that bad, apart from the operators comments of course.

  Clio 172 Ph1
Power sounds spot on to me for a ph1.

LOL kinda makes you laugh when they sold the car as a 172! was this some mythical figure they pulled out of the air?

well here come the mods, this car is going to make 170hp, still feels quite quick though for what it is. I had a Golf G60 a few years back with 215bhp but it seems like ages ago, fair bit heavier though.

cheers guys looks like this is pretty normal, although strange about the Air/Fuel getting so rich

Sorry guys, i disagree a little, most ph1's iv seen come out around 165, id say thats a little low on power, as Fred said new lambda, a good service too.

When was the cambelt changed mate? Did they use the correct locking tools?

whe provved in ARgentina a clio RS ph1 in the dyno and was 165bhp!
and the same car with catcams 1, was 182bhp and they not are finished. The guy who prepared the car said that its gonna make some changes to have 195bhp!

  Ph1 172.
It seems slightly low, I know it's not a massive difference, but mine produced 162 in pretty much standard form.

yeah i'd be happy with something around 160bhp stock, thats a nice result. Some people say replace Lambda sensor, some people tell me that lambda is ignored on WOT, so I reckon I am gonna go with the following and see where I am at

-get ecu read for any fault codes
-repalce lambda
-full service inc spark plugs/leads
-Find out for sure if any MAF or MAP sensors are involved and replace them too

I found this on ebay which suggest they do have a MAF sensor, surely if this is broken/dirty i could throw out your air/fuel
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Renault-Sport-Clio-172-182-MAP-MAF-Sensor-/280488751708

also did anyone see the top gear with the Renault Avantime challenge, they were well down on power, repalced sensors etc and got back to factory power!

theres hope yet!

has your 172 had a decat or was that bogo standard figure?

id replace the lambda sensor, and the spark plugs (ONLY USE NGK PFR6-10) that mixed with the fresh air filter from the service your going to do should hopefully bring it back up.

  RS RIP
first trie reading out fault codes/diagnostics, lambda-fault should show up if that's the prob.

Will save you money when it turns out to NOT be the lambda

thanks I will try and source some, i take it these were the renault recomended ones? or just a better replacement for originals?

they are the original renault ones, if you get them from a renault dealer you will pay about twice as much for the same plug in a renault box so just get them from an NGK dealer, they are the best plugs for the engine, dont be fooled by other manufacturers claiming power gains from their plugs!

cool cheers mate, I will pop down to "repco" (like Halfords) and see if they have got em. Think I am gonna get big service done, fuel filter, K&N air filter, spark plugs.

what type of oil do you use?

  ITB'd MK1
If that's on a hub dyno, it's significantly down on power. A hub dyno has much lower losses than a rolling road.

i'm guessing your cam timing is out

yeah cheers mate, a few ppl have said that. If i take it to just any garage will they know? We have a "european" car specialist locally but they deal in all makes. Does anyone have access to a workshop manual for this car?

forgive me for being a dumb ass but how can cam timing reduce power output or am i opening a can of worms here? is there much room for adjustment on a standard 172 Ph1?
