Newbie help !

  White Van Man
Hi all, I've just bought a 2000 Mk1 172, and I've now noticed that I've got a hole in the exhaust on the bend in front of the back box. I'm a bit confused as I don't know if the cat is the next box forward, or are they the two smaller more oval shape boxes further forward again, quite close to the engine ! There's no joint in the pipework between the back box and the center one, just what looks like a welded sleeve...? Any info will be gratefully received, as will someone selling me a cheap one, as I've just bought the car, and her indoors will cut my 'nads off if I have to stump up around £300 for a new one !

Welcome!! I'm not sure, visit an exhaust centre would be the easiest thing to do.

Tried calling all the major ones today, none of them have the 172 listed, the only 2 litre they have is the Williams, just got the old "sorry mate, don't have that one in my book" !

the cat on Mk1 172's like ours is a massive double barrelled effort.

you can replace the centre section as a seperate item and the same with the rear section.

Unless it is the original system, as this comes in one complete section. If this is the case, get a new uprated custom system from Pro-Speed etc etc

Thanks a lot for all the info, I thought someone had been ars*ng about and welded a bit of pipe in place ! One more thing, anyone got a standard airbox that they want to get rid of, I've got one of those cone filters on at the mo', but I don't like to attract too much attention when I'm "making progress", and that induction noise is really loud, or is it the hole in the exhaust....!
