Newbie - Looking for a 197 - Up to £6k

Hi Guys,

My first post on here, I currently drive a B5 Audi RS4 & a mrk4 diesel Golf (TDI Match) as an everydayer, the golf is going up for sale - as in all honesty its a dull drive & its not the cheapest to maintain, i've rectified all the common faults over the years, its been in the family since new!

I also fancy a change & the clio sports (Lapis Blue) have won my heart!

I have been looking in the usual places i.e. pistonheads/ autotrader & a few other less major portals, however I was wondering if anybody could shed any light, as to where to find an enthusiasts car, is there a classifieds section on here?

Also what are ones views clio's vrs Megane Sports?

When buying what are the common faults/ what should i be looking out for, i.e. cambelts etc?

Hi Angus, there is indeed a classified section on here but it's only visible to club members (which costs an exceedingly reasonable £12 per year and it also allows you access to a vast pool of technical knowledge and help).

Lapis Blue is a Porsche colour, not Renault. It's either Albi Blue (dark) or Racing Blue that you mean.

Valid point Feirny - Typing error, was meaning Albi Blue, not sure where that came from! I personally think Albi blue is absolutley stunning, I used to have a nogaro blue audi, and it reminds me of that!

Hi and welcome.

Check 197.net too, I went there when looking to buy my car and found out what to look for;

Make sure the belts have been done if its 5 year old/done 72k) or thatll be around £550 and make sure the gear changes are all smooth with no crunches above 5krpm or that'll be around £300 when it s***s itself

Desirable options are

Auto xenons with cornering lights (identified by washer jets)
Climate control (look for a screen on the centre consol rather than knobs)
Recaro seats
cup chassis (red brakes and anthracite wheels)

Marmite options are
rs splitter
rs skirts
cup spoiler

All of the above I love

R27s(f1 team) are the best specced, they come with recaros and cup chassis as standard. And also come in ly (you can't get ly as an option on normal 197s ) so bare that in mind if you want a well specced car. They do have a £1-2k premium over normal 197s

197cups are the lowest spec and are identified by black plastic bump strips and hard plastic dash

Danny172, sadly for the life of me can't work out how to add photos on here, (Not sure if i have permission as yet)! Thank you all for the welcome & Knuckles thank you so much for all of that information, I love the recaro' buckets, but hate the front RS splitters!

Its strange renault dealerships seem to be cheaper than anyother used car sales forecourt! Love the R27'S however think my budget is more 197cup, which I would be more then happy with! Really annoyed missed a 197cup yesterday, it only had 33,000 on the clock & was priced at £6,220, bargain me thinks with cambelt etc all done!

the rs splitters are definately growers. i was going to sell mine when i first got it... now i think they look weird without them

a little out of budget but hero spec (bar climate control)

RS Splitters we will see, who knows maybe 6 months down the line - you will be saying I told you so, although at this stage really not convinced!
