Newbie, Looking to get 182

Alright guys. I had a test drive yesterday in a 182. I have always liked these cars. I currently have a Focus ST and looking to downsize now. There is just a couple of things I'm wanting to know about these cars.
I notice the clutch was very heavy and steering heavy too. Is this normal? My girlfriend stat in the car and did not like it at all, to my disappointment. Something that was a bit annoying was having to stretch to get it in 3rd and 5th, this was the same when i had a clio 10 years ago.. Are these reliable little cars, any problems/faults to look out for? I just cant make up my mind yet. The car has 25,000, 1 owner, fsh.

I think the clutches do tend to be a bit heavy in the 182. Mine always has been. I wouldnt say the steering is heavy, but the lock is bad. Like doing a 3 point turn in an oil tanker lol. Generally reliable, both of mine have been fine. Im sure you would enjoy the 182

^^ Agreed, clutches are a little heavy but like any car you get used to it and it just feels normal! I'v had my 182 for nearly 2 months now and i can't comment on reliability but i absolutely love it. Like driving a Go-Kart :approve:

Yes my clutch is very heavy but as mentioned you do get used to it. My dad always comments on it when he has to drive my clio. When you're driving it every day tho you forget how heavy it is until you drive something else and then jump back in the clio again. I personally much prefer a heavy clutch. Steering is a little heavy depending what you're used to.

I've had mine four years now (05 reg) and she's never missed a beat (touch wood!).

Go and buy one and tell your gf to hush her gums! Hehe

Can vouch for the heavy clutch/steering - And getting used to it.

I'd personally be gutted going from a Focus ST to a 182 though, but if you have to downsize, then a 182 isn't a bad shout at all

The 197/200 has a softer feel 'ladies' clutch

You completely get used to the clutch and the steering isn't really very heavy at all. Only when compared to micas etc.

When I drive a car with a soft clutch now the biting point seems huge and it feels like the clutch is slipping :rasp:

Whereabouts are you? Maybe you should bob along to local meet and see more of them first hand - give the owners a grilling too?

I've had mine since new and just had the 72k service yesterday. I use it as a daily driver too, but I do tend to give any car I have a fair amount of TLC. It been a great car to own - quite cheap to run and maintain - and returns around 32mpg typically.

Servicing is definitely reasonable but check that the cambelt has been done on the one you're interested in as regardless of mileage, even a very late 182 is in that age-zone to get it done.

Specialists are dotted around the country and know these cars inside and out. It's a common (and often justified!) viewpoint that these specialists are much more worth visiting than the local Renault dealership. I did a round trip of circa 120miles yesterday to get my 182 serviced at Birchdown - yet have a Renault dealership less than 2miles from my front door. Go figure.

Similar things that i experienced when i test drove, notably the horrible driving position.

couple weeks into owning one and you forget it all, drive any other car and they all feel horrible and the clio feels perfect. i find the steering spot on for b roads.

Im in Lanarkshire. Cambelts are usually done around 70,000. 25,000 seems a very short period of time.

Ive had mine for 2 years now and apart from general wear and tear its been fairly reliable. The clutch is very heavy but you do get used to it.

Im thinking of up grading from a 182 to an ST so would be good to hear how you compare them?

mines 5ish and done 38k, All thats broke is the headlight washers leaked.
